I just bought a brand new sealed Pioneer vsx-d814k for $110 today. I checked pricewatch and pricegrabber and ebay and it was a good deal. The receiver got good reviews.

If you are gonna go cheap on ur receiver, you might as well buy a cheapo out of the box home theater system, if you just want basic surround sound.

I for one would not go cheap on the receiver, because its the most important part of your home theater system, and this receiver just does not cut it for me.

Good deal though, since u save 50$ off the competition.

I think an argument could be made that speakers matter more than your receiver.

I think it's closer to $100 off the competition.

I think
814 ($110)
3 pairs polk r15s ($150)
dayton 12" ($140)

= $400 + shipping

would be a goog competator to

an onkyo htib for about the same price.

Thanks Yoyo for the suggestions. I will get me a few decent speakers and sub and I will have a decent budget HT for my bedroom for about $500 total.

What other things do you recommend to complete my poor man HT? TIA.

I am in the market for a cheap HTPC setup. I need to buy Speakers/Receivers to connect to my nForce2 soundstorm via optical spdif. Can someone enlighten me with some reads?

Do I need a receiver? Any speaker sets I can connect directly to the mobo via spdif?

Thanks.

Looks like the polk are not on sale at the moment so my first suggestion for speakers wouldn't work right now.

They go on sale pretty often though, so if you go to outpost.com and search for polk, whatever is on sale should come to the top.

R15 on sale go for $50/pair or $40/pair

R30s for $50 each
R50s for $50 or $80 each

Also make sure you check out color when buying as they come in black or cherry I think?

Ok... so there are plenty of other speaker options out there, but a 6.0 set for $150 + shipping is pretty darn good.

Fluance is a popular alternative. You can get an especially good deal if you buy a set off ebay. This auction for example was a really nice price on their lower end 5.0 set. Their SX-HTB set is a little more.

Anyway... there are other bookshelf speaker options too if you're interested.

For the sub, I'd say wait until the daytons are back in stock at partsexpress. I haven't seen a better subwoofer deal for a new sub than the 10" and 12" from them.

This is the general placement you're looking for for a 5.1 setup. Is that going to work for your room?

If surround placement is going to be tough, it's no big deal to go with just a 3.1 setup or something.

If you don't get a HTIB set, you're going to need speaker wire. Here's some info to read up on. You can get some inexpensive stuff at cablesforless. You'll also need an RCA cable to hook up your receiver to the sub. Any old RCA cable will work fine.

I don't know if there's anything else you want to know about? I might be able to make some suggestions on other stuff if you have some questions.

You don't need to get a receiver for this.

Klipsch GMX digital would be a good match for you and at $99 it's a heck of a deal.

This would also work for people that would want to connect to a DVD player as their only source.

For other people hooking up their computers, they're going to want to make sure they get a receiver that has 5.1 analog input or get a card that can do DDL like your soundstorm is capable of.

For you, any receiver with a digital connection that can decode Dolby Digital will work.

What kind of budget are you thinking about?

AVSforum and Hometheaterforum are two good places to read up on stuff.

Lots of people over there that know a heck of a lot more than I do too.

This is what I was thinking about. It cost $200 at Frys, but I am able to get an open box item at CompUSA for $140.

$200 is about the absolute limit I would spend at the moment. However I believe I still need to read more to be sure exactly what I want. Thanks for the info. That Klipsch seems solid too. I will read more before I commit to my surround sound setup.

Well... there aren't a whole lot of HTIB options for under $200.

Most of them are total trash.

In addition to the Klipsch I mentioned, you could also get a refurb Logitech z-680 or maybe even z-5500 set for around that much.

i just bought the panasonic xr55 for $230. the athena point 5s for $200. and Im waiting for teh 10 or 12 inch dayon sub to come back in stock.
got some soundking 16g wire and a couple of banana plugs from partsexpress. thats probably the highest recommended budget system on avsforum.

tempted to get the aura bass shakers but Id have to use another receiver to power them. (Id rather not take away the sound system in the bedroom)

Im also tempted to get teh advent sub for $80 instead of teh dayton sub. I cant really turn up the bass because Im in an apartment.

This one has 6.1 preouts.

You don't mean preouts on the front of the receiver do you

HK AVR135 is another one what's inexpensive for a factory refurb with a new 2 year warranty

I'm in the same situation

I jumped on a pair of Onix Rocket ELTs, got the Panasonic XR55, SoundKing 16G + banana plugs. The longer I wait for the Dayton subs, the more tempting the HSU and SVS subs become

What have I got myself into :(

That is what I need. The front line out(preamp) which the unit you linked has on the back of the receiver. Thank you. Hopefully I can find a deal on the Harmon model you linked.

You see that the Pioneer this thread is about has preouts as well, right?

My link is already to a deal on the HK. Normally it's about $300.

Slightly offtopic but does anyone know what the life expectancy on a receiver should be? My receiver is starting to die after having it for 6 years. It is a technics. I know it isn't the greatest but it was a few hundred back in the day and had dolby digital before dolby digital was standard.

I think this depends on a lot of stuff including build quality, how you treat it, and random stuff.

My dad's pioneer receiver has been working for about 35 years now I think.

My roommate's pioneer receiver has problems and he only bought it 6 months ago.

I'd be happy if my receiver gives me 6 good years of service. I'll likely want a new one before then anyway.

The older units bought 20+ years ago seem to last longer than the newer ones. I've seen real old Onkyo's still sounding great. Back in the day everything was silver like it is now, then they went away for a long time, not that I like silver components.

The VSX-D814 isn't on CC's website. Should it be? Is this a big YMMV?
How often does Outpost have the Polk $40 or $50 a pair sale?
Also is there a cheaper sub than that Dayton? I'd even take a 6" or 8". It's for my parents.
