Pioneer first to do resume on BD disc?

Well everyone has seen this question, "why doesn't my BD player resume on BD movies?" The standard answer is, it's not the player, it's the disc, specifically Java based BDs. Well, Pioneer quietly released new firmware for their BD players that enables this function a few weeks ago. I found it to be pretty cool considering I'm not aware of any other players that are capable of doing this, yet. I just tried the new firmware on my 09FD, and it actually resumes a BD movie (Java based) after it has been stopped. It should resume even after a power cycle, but I haven't tried it yet. Haven't tried it on my 23FD, but it should work just the same.

Anyway, for anyone that has a Pioneer BD player, download the latest firmware and give it a shot. Very cool!

PS3 has always done it but you have the option to turn it off.

No it hasn't. It will do it on some BDs (non Java based). I have a PS3 and have accidentally hit the stop button, and when I hit play, it makes me go through the whole start up movie sequence from the beginning.

So in essence, they did an automatic bookmark at stop, and then play the bookmark (probably the latest) upon re-inserting?

It would be interesting to watch the movie, create a bookmark, back up a few chapters stop the disc and then see where it "resumed" from.

I've always just used the bookmark feature when I needed to stop / resume later.
