Pioneer DVD Rom Issues

I own a Pioneer 16X DVD drive, model CDP116X-SDVD (it is the slot loading one). It fails to initialize when I turn my computer on. When my Bios is detecting devices, I see the light on the DVD drive come on, but it nothing is detected. What should I do? Do I have a bad drive.

If the light comes on, there's obviously power to the drive, so what I'd check is that the master/slave jumper is set properly and that the IDE cable is secured tightly, with the pins oriented correctly. Just re-seat the cable and check the jumper to be sure, if you haven't already. Other than that, I'd check to make sure the IDE controller works with other drives, and if so, you may have a defective drive. It happens sometimes.

Check the cable connection and the cable itself. I had problems with my cdrom/cdr/dvd and sometimes it wouldn't pick up one or any of them when initializing but playing with the cable sometimes fixed it right off.

Ive seen a loose pin in the molex power cable cause similar problems. It will have the power feed but not proper grounding, etc. One loose pin out of 4 and you could get powerup but no function.
