Quick question....

If you bought the OEM version of this drive it would not come with the Pioneer software.

What would you use instead of the Pioneer software.

Thanks for your thoughts,

Jeff

Doesn't Nero cost $99 retail, or $69 downloaded?

The retail version of the DVR-108 includes:
Ulead DVD MovieFactory 3.5 Disc Creator allows you to burn movies, slideshows, data and music to CD or DVD in an instant.
Ulead Video Studio 8.0SE allows first-time users to edit and create professional-looking videos with ease.
Ulead Photo Explorer 8.5SE provides an efficient way to transfer, browse, modify and distribute photos, music and video.
Ulead Burn. Now 1.5 is easy to use disc recording software. Users can take full advantage of their CD/DVD burner to create data and audio discs plus copy discs.
Ulead DVD Player 1.5 offers high compatibility and plays commercial DVDs and DVDs created by other Ulead products.
NovaBACKUP 7.1 prevents users from losing data. Virtually all businesses today rely heavily on computers and computer systems. Losing information on any of these systems could be potentially disastrous. NovaStor's NovaBackup helps reduce these risks for both businesses and end users at ease. NovaBackup allows users the choice of a variety of different backup media, including DVDs and CDs. Its ease of use and advanced options makes it an ideal solution for any home user, small business or large corporation.

The DVR-108 seemed popular, I was just wondering what software folks were using if they were not getting the retail software.

Thanks again,

Jeff

:) :)

But after the trial, (30 days?) then what?

Check out the Software Forum, there's a sticky tread with freeware. I found one there I'm using with my Pioneer until I figure something out. So far, works good - I haven't used it much though.

I had a NEC 2500 before buying this... I use to make coaters a lot with the NEC. Now with the pioneer I haven't made a single one yet... I don't think the buffer overrun protection works so great in the NEC...

I believe you can burn protected DVDs by altering some configurations in NERO.
I am not sure about that though. Someone correct me if I am wrong.
BTW, check my profile if you want NERO 6 ultra.

Can these issues be fixed with the firmware hacks I keep hearing about? Could someone refer me to a good website with the info?
Also, I've heard pretty good stuff about Pioneer drives, but could we get feedback from someone who actually owns it? Im on the fence right now.

I've had mine for around 2 months I think, and I love it. Haven't burned a single coaster except when trying to burn some 2x media at 16x just to see what would happen. Plus, throw in the continuing hacked firmware updates of >Nil and others, it's great. With hacked firmware, I'm burning 8x media at under 7 minutes, I think and DVD ripping up to 10-12x (it jumps around, not sure of exact number). I haven't had any compatiblity issues, but I've only been using Ritek G04's & G05's. I could probably burn the 4x media that fast, but I ran out of it before I downloaded the hacked firmware.

To address some of the negatives, I don't consider 32x CD burning 'slow.' But I don't burn many CD's, so maybe it's slow to others. As for the protection negatives, I don't copy games either, so it's not an issue for me. I have no idea if hacked firmware can fix that, but I suppose if you're copying a lot of games, this may not be the burner for you.

Some good sites for info:

Ongoing Pioneer x08 thread, lots of good info, including links to reviews, comparisons and hacked firmwares

I dithered too long and missed NewEgg's $74(+4) price: it had risen to $80 (+4) as of an hour ago. :(

'Google'd a good (ResellerRatings=8.4) alternative source and 'thought I'd pass it along: ChiefValue for $75.70+4.

Just now I've re-checked NE and found they've dropped back to $74+4! That's NE -- ever-changing prices. :p

While I do like NE, and their $78 total, 'think I'll still use CV as it avoids the $5 in NJ taxes that NE collects. And, I -do- feel good supporting the "little guy" competitor once-in-awhile. And WHEEE: almost $3 in savings. :)

Edit follows:
OH DRAT! As I hit the penultimate checkout page, CV finally noted that NJ is a taxable state ("NJ, PR, TN or CA") for them. Looks like the same taxable ones as NE?! Both NE and CV are CA-based, but it's hard to imagine CV has the same "presence" in NJ/TN/PR as NE... so is it the tax authority of those states (if so, why isn't every company charging for these states?). Or is NE's parent acting as a fulfillment house for CV? How puzzling... and guess I'll switch my order back to NE.

... "never mind"..................
