plextor is the best
pioneer is the cheapest

if you can afford it, get the plex, you won't regret it (your wallet might, though) 🙂

And I haven't heard anyone complaining about Sony...
It might be expensive, but it's a Sony... (like the ad)

i heard sony's ripping speeds are low. I really haven't heard too much about plextor. Iam kind of leaning toward plextor though. Any advice? Pioneer looks good too....How long does it take you guys with a pioneer to rip a movie?

Don't rip with the burners, get a $40 combo like the Lite-on and it will rip much faster and save on wear and tear.

My Pioneer DVR-106 rips at 2x which I believe all burners do because of legal reasons. From what I hear though, there are hacked firmware that will allow you to rip much faster. But like Todd33 said, just get a separate DVD-ROM for ripping.

While that is somewhat true, burners are made to last...

I have over a 1000k burns and rips on my lite on and still going strong.

I was leaning toward the plextor because i have nothing but good news about it. I heard sony's quality sucks, and they break quickly. I just wanna buy something that will last, and will work alot of different types of media.

I have a 510A replaced my A04. Sony has released software (DSS) so it now can rip DVD's at up to 8x I think. The sony feels much more solidly built, the tray is much stronger compared to my old pioneer. I hear good things about Plextor but I don't have one, used to love them back in the SCSI days but their IDE drives have never been up the to build quality of their old SCSI Drives.
