Pioneer 106s/2 noise problem

My Pioneer 106s/2 spins up very loudly after inserting a DVD (which is to be expected), however, many times, the drive does not spin down to normal decibel levels while playing the DVD; it will continue the same loud spinning that it does during disc recognition. Because this symptom is tempermental (problem occurs maybe 3 out of 4 times), I am curious to know if this is a hardware malfunction or if it is a software problem. I use a REALMagic Hollywood decoder. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks
