Pins and needles during a project

Is this not the WORST feeling ever?:

You find a solution for a big project you're working on. However, the whole solution depends on a developer making something for you, and you're just waiting for the "No wai! You can't make that! It defies the laws of physics!" or something like that.

I hate putting my fate in other people's hands 🙂 All I need is a simple app made, but there always seems to be a snag. Either I'm done with the project this week ahead of schedule or I have to rework everything and go a month over schedule.

Not entirely sure what you're trying to say, but it sounds like the problem is that you think it's a "simple app." The vast majority of the time, non-developers completely misunderstand what is actually required to accomplish something.

Interesting hearing from the other side of the fence, but I personally hate it when PM's have unrealistic ideas of how long something should take to be completed.

I really hate it when PM's think I need to have several meetings everyday to talk about work. How I am supposed to do my job when all we do is meet and talk about it?

My reasoning is I need data from 5 separate systems to be shared. I've installed a server that connects to all of the appropriate domains, now all I need is a database and a web form that can access and consolidate the data. I'm thinking it should be no problem, but SQL and Access are not my strong points.

If I can get this done, I'm almost guaranteed the max % raise this year, because this resource will be a breakthrough. If not, well...that just sucks.

So you're basically wanting a portal to talk between all of the systems... Honestly it's not as easy as it sounds. What about security?

In this situation I'd setup web services on each of the 5 systems and pass back XML with the data you are looking for and talk to the other systems with it.

Yes, this is probably not a "simple app" 😉
Maybe if your developers are already quite familiar with these five separate systems, or the data is very simple.

Gah!!!! I got the "Sure, we can do that!" call, then 4 minutes later I got the "Wait...I need to make sure about something" call.

I'll keep you guys bored with this soap opera that only affects me when I get more updates.
