I know drag racing is hard on cars...but it seemed like there were a LOT of malfunctions. Wouldn't you want to check your vehicle very thoroughly if there was a chance of losing it?

I mean, the Civic guy complained about an oil leak, a cut line, a bad clutch, losing third gear (wtf, on a manual? You always lose second before third) and a hard-to-get-into second gear.

The Trans Am guy's complaint was a bit more valid...I mean, if he doesn't have a tranny cooler, I can see a gear going out after a bunch of hard runs.
Still kinda lame they penalize cars until the outcome changes...if I had a boost controller, would they make me keep turning it further and further down until I lost?

From what I read on the Camaro forum...
1. The cut line was because they ran it through the hood latch. The hood latch cut it.
2. He lied about losing third gear, only said it because the other guy said he lost 2nd gear.
3. The Trans Am guy had switches installed to retard timing so he could sandbag a few runs while still looking good.
4. The Civic guy wasn't supposed to adjust the boost, they agreed on that ahead of time.

The point of penalizing the faster car was to make the final race (what was supposed to be the third race I think) "fair." Of course there's nothing to stop someone from sandbagging the first two to get an advantage in the last race. According to the Trans-Am guy, the Civic was a lot faster than it looked, the kid just wasn't very good.

unfair race

Yeah, they really hosed the Trans Am owner. But he won in the end, so it's all good.

Some people are saying that the show is "fake" and they don't actually sign over their cars... which I kind of assumed. Does anyone know if that's true?

Its a real show. The civic guy pleaded to buy his car back. So the TA owner sold it to him for 300$ but kept the front bumper to hang in his garage. lol

The TA owner denies he sold the car back for $300, It was rumored to be more but he won't say the exact amount.

Yeah, I saw that... he said they agreed to keep the amount confidential. I still wonder if that's really true or if that's what the show's producers told them to say. It just strikes me as unlikely that someone would agree to put their car up in a contest like that, ESPECIALLY when the "rules" are agreed on ad hoc between races. It makes for better TV if they're competing for their cars, but it wouldn't surprise me if that's not truly the case (or if at very least the show compensates the loser for the car). I don't think many people would want to go on a game show where they could potentially LOSE something.

even if the civic had much more power than the trans-am, the fact that it's a front wheel drive car majorly hinders its traction.

Re: Pinks tonight its me!
What they didn't show was the former owner collapsing to his knees when I took his car down the track and yes he was crying. They had to take the kid to the hospital that evening he basicly had a nervous breakdown. I did feel bad and sold him the car back two days later for less than it was worth but enough that he felt some pain. but not untill i ragged it on the dyno. I seriosly hope the kid doesn't kill himself the ricer boys are dogging him bad on the boards.

Quote from the guy who owned the TA. HAHA!

He also said later that he got more than enough to fix his car, so more than $300 apparantly.

If you get sued and end up on Judge Judy or the like, since it's limited to $5000, THEY pay whatever the judgement is. God bless TV Commercials.

Well, I guess you would know more about the subject than me. You hail from ricetopia, AKA Los Angeles, the mecca of rice.

The one thing I dislike about most domestic drivers is their unparalleled and (almost) universal hate of imports. Get over it already.

Coming from possibly the biggest Honda fanboy on the boards ...

LMFAO @ the big fat ricer.

If Jumbo wants to shave a few tenths off his quarter, how about dropping about a hundred pounds by cutting back on the Big Macs? 😀

I disagree with that statement, I like domestics and I drive a Corolla. But to me there is a difference between Ricers posers or domestic posers who talk a lot of smack and can?t back it up and real car people who do. The problem is for every real car guy there is 20 talking $hit, right now it?s just the ricers getting the brunt because there are a lot of Imports around to slap worthless wings and stickers on. Back in the day it was 6 Cylinder Mustangs and Camaros now it?s Civics and Sentras.

I never said I disliked imports. I dislike ricers though.

And apparently, everyone from LA.

😛

Sheeesh, no. Just ricers from LA.

Edit: Wait, are you implying everyone from LA is a ricer?

Yeah, that's exactly what I was thinking of... actually, I think there is a set prize pool, and they split what's left over after the judgement or something like that... so the loser gets some money, but there's still incentive for both of them to try to win. [edit: referring to the court shows, not this show]

It doesn't matter where the car was built or what kind of engine powers it. What matters is the spirit, knowledge, ability, and attitude of the driver.

I know this wasn't the point of the thread but I would like to voice my opinion. There is no replacement for displacement. Whatever boost you can give a 4 cylinder, you can give an 8 cylinder. <3 V8 4 LIFE

So true. I just don't understand the mentality. Why buy a crappy commuter car and make it a little bit faster by putting more money into it than it would cost to actually buy a car with some performance and then talk trash?

That is the dumbest thing I have ever seen. It should be heads up if you want to race. "Bring what your brought and hope its enough"

I have heard of that saying too but I did quote it correctly. That is the commonly used phrase in the Mr. Gasket Pro 5.0 catagory. If you read 5.0 Mustand and Super Fords they will often quote it in their magazine.
