Nothin can touch Floyd IMO.

Not many people mention this album, but it is one of my favorites of theirs. You should also check it out:

The Final Cut.

Eh, I think Zep is up there with Floyd, but for completely different reasons.... 😀

Here's a challenge for all Floyd fans: Get a local non-college radio station to play "Several Species of Small Furry Animals Gathered Together in a Cave and Grooving with a Pict" as a request.

That's a messed up song... very very messed up. I imagine it'd fvck a d00d on acid up REAL bad.

Pink Floyd is great, but so broad a topic, really, to openly discuss coherently. I'll take a st@b at it by saying that you don't have a true appreciation of Pink Floyd until you listen to the Wall straight through. Do it at least once before you die 😉

i only have copies of DSOTM and WYWH 🙁

then rejoince!

Dark side is their best album...it is good beyond measure....in fact, it took 28 years for someone (Tool with Lateralus) to put out an album that can compare with DSOTM! Unsurprisingly, Tool admit being strongly influenced by PF.

Tool??? Haha! That's a good one!

Sorry but I don't think anything they ever put out could be in the same league as Pink Floyd.

Lateralus man. The structure is nearly identical to DSOTM. Take some rather common emotions/concepts, write great, meaningful lyrics, pair them up with some progressive, yet still great music, connect the songs to make the album a whole...and there you have it.

Music is totally different, but the basics are nearly identical.

I think we should wait another 25 or so years to see if Lateralus is still on the Billboard list... 😉

Pfft...who cares about Billboard, my opinion is all that matters 😉

btw, I just remembered that I have a little Wall (In the Flesh) in my sig. 😀

Meddle and Animals are great albums too.

I was waiting for you to jump on to this thread.😛

Sorry I'm late, just got back from seeing "Phone Booth." 😛 So am I the resident Pink Floyd fan here?😉 I'm actually surprised that no one has mentioned The Piper at the Gates of Dawn, which is also a very good album. It has one of my favorite songs from them, Lucifer Sam. "That cat's something I can't explain!!!" 🙂

I get such a kick out of reading how all you young guys are discovering this "little known band" called "Pink Floyd."

Without Googling, can any of you name the best selling album of ALL TIME? Hint: it's got something to do with this thread. Dark Side of The Moon is the best selling album (or CD for those of you that have no frickin' idea what an "album" is) of all time. Yes, really. Go ahead an Google it. 😛

Pink Floyd has been around since 1967 or so. Their original lead singers' name was Syd Barrett and quite a few of their more popular songs are dedicated to/about him. 🙂

Floyd has been a big part of my life for many years now.

Until you have seen Laser Floyd while...um...under the influence, you have no idea what life is about. 😎

ps
That was many, many years ago....at the Hayden Planetarium. 🙂

Syd Barret's solo albums are CRAZY.. me like.

Wish you were here is most listenable, DSOTM is most mature\introspective, not to dtract in any way from Animals which is a personal fav, just trying to steer the boy into and not scare him off the floyd. 😉

Animals rocks. Meddle is nice too. (Talking about "old Floyd" here)

I was introduced in 1992 by a roomie of mine in college. Floyd is my favorite band by far. As far as albums go, it depends on my mood, but I listened to Floyd for a while before I knew that Roger Waters was the 2nd Lead. So, I tried some of Syd's stuff, and I wasn't prepared......Roger is my favorite, by far. DSOTM is my favorite album.

And the one thing I love about Floyd (pre-Division Bell), is that I can listen to all of their albums straight through. I wish I did drugs so I could watch the Wizard of Oz and listen to DSOTM....but alas, I can't.

BTW....IMO, there are no comparisons to Floyd. You can compare styles, and compare quality....but no one can touch em. And then if they could, it wouldn't matter, b/c you've got the live shows too......and no one touches those either.

BTW part II. Syd Barret went crazy 😉

Well, time (not the Floyd song 😉) is an interesting soother; it's been a long time since my younger, more experimental days. I am quite normal now...been there, done that, am now a productive member of mainstream society, etc. etc. 😉

PF was revolutionary, and became evolutionary; they have changed so much over the years. I don't like all of their stuff...the new stuff sucks ass and in IMHO, they are done. But that's my opinion...YMMV. 🙂

Albums like DSOTM, Animals and WYWH I can listen to straight thru...time just seems to stand still.

As a guitarist I can assert that David Gilmour is brilliant; he plays with such exquisite restraint and his TONE is always all that. 😎

Many have said that Pink Floyd is David Gilmour and Roger Waters....Roger is one of the founding members...technically, David Gilmour is not...but Floyd didn't gain massive popularity until David joined the band.

Roger is the dark side, David is the musical temperment...what a great team they make, even though they can't stand each other....🙁

Up until now you've led a cruely sheltered life. Kinda sad, really.

Anyway, their music is truely amasing.

Dave

My first experience with Pink Floyd was when I saw "The Wall" when I was about 8 years old. That movie freaked me out big time. I never looked at a flower the same way again.😉

My favorite albums are in order DSOTM, The Wall, & WYWH.

One of these days....

Pink Floyd is great. I still need to get Saucerfull of Secrets to complete my collection.

Enjoy it.

i'm listening to DSOTM all the way through for the first time....
i usually only listen to the last 4 tracks, i'm listening to track 3 right now. damn this is good 😀

makes me sorta wish i was born 30 years earlier 😉

WTF? You only listen to the last 4 tracks?:Q
Since you seem to be into mind altering substances(although it's fvcking cool anyway), you should try to the Wizard of Oz/Dark Side of The Moon synch up. You can find it on Kazzaa already synched up under the title "Dark Side of the Rainbow"
crazy sh!t...😀

i actually downloaded wizard of oz like 10 minutes ago, specifically for the DSOTM combo.
I'm going to wait for the right time to watch it though (i.e. high as a kite)

edit: goddamn this guy on the guitar is absolutely amazing!!!

Actually, I just heard that Michael Jackson's 'Thriller' is the best selling album of all time. DSOTM has been on the Billboard 200 longer than anything, though.
