Pink Floyd or The Beatles or...?

Pink Floyd.

The Beatles' music is very pop-sounding and upbeat, and a part of why they were able to change music is precisely because their pop sound appealed to such a huge number of people. That sort of thing has never really been my cup of tea, not because it's popular, but because to be popular it has to be simple and broadly approachable. I do like the Beatles and, as should any fan of music, listen to them from time to time, but Pink Floyd has long been my favorite band.

Shut up. Yes there is. It is one of those three.

The problem with Floyd is that when you're basically a happy person, it's kind of a downer. You can only listen The Wall so many times in a row before either 1) you're not happy anymore or 2) you have to listen to Robbie Neville's C'est la Vie.

Or the really early stuff. That was happy...

You can ride it if you like
It's got a basket
A bell that rings
And things to make it look good
I'd give it to you if I could
But I borrowed it

when you lead singer goes insane and you spend the next 10 years making music about it, then your music tends to be a bit darker. dsotm is a very dark album in that regard, much darker than the wall.

I've listened to DSotM thousands of times and have never found the album anything less than euphoric

You sure you're not talking about "wish you were here"? lol

//edit

Live @ Pompeii, one of their greatest works. Now THAT was dark.

I was going to mention live @ Pompeii, it's my favourite! I love the dvd though, it's so cool seeing them when they were young.

I can't choose. I just can't click vote... 🙂

*in my head* "It's obviously the Beatles, go ahead and hit it. Ooh... But it's Floyd... Floyd's your favorite... I gotta pick Floyd. But "Strawberry Fields"... But "Have a Cigar"... Argh! Make it stop!

I like BOTH bands...for different reasons. Both were influential in their own way, BOTH made good music, both are still in my listening collection.

HOWEVER, the two are vastly different in their musical styles and it's very difficult to compare them.

this. the beatles are more influential and great to listen to whenever. floyd is only when you're in a weird mood or depressed and shit. therefore beatles wins for overall listenability

I don't care for Pink Floyd and they have never had any major influence on music as a whole, so I voted the Beatles. I prefer the Stones to either, but given the choices this poll is a no-brainer.

Some1 explain the appeal of Pink Floyd. The song with "teachers, leave those kids alone" or along the lines is just so... hard to describe.. kinda like the vocal parts are bland imo... or am i missing the big picture?

Whereas, the Beatles have timeless classics like Hey Jude, Yesterday, There are places I remember, etc

Go grab "Wish you were here". Start it from the beginning and dont stop it or skip ahead. Sit back and let your mind wander with the music. Then if you feel like a really good time smoke some dope.

One of the things about Floyd is each song worked right into the next to form a giant storyline. I never appreaciated it as much as a kid. But I do now. I will gladly listen to the entire Dark Side album from front to back.

Now it isnt for everybody. But often many people think the few songs that are played on the radio is all there is to Pink Floyd.

I think there are other bands that deserve recognition as well. LedZepplin, The Who, Queen, and other acts like Neil Young, The Doors, Elton John, Lynard Skynard. The late 60s and 70s was so filled with music talent I weep at my own generations list of craptacular 1 hit wonders and manufactured artists.

Your second sentence removed a lot of weight from the first one 😛

Do you really believe that first sentence or is my sarcasm meter fucked up this morning?

It would be hard to argue that one of the greatest rock bands of all time had no influence on music as a whole...but then again how could their influence best be described, 'elevating stoned-out-of-your-mind depression-rock to new heights'? 😀
