PIII700 or PIII733

This is quite weird really...PIII733's are just $3 more expensive than PIII700 here. So, for some tricky decisions (options):

1) Get the PIII700 and HOPE it will be among the many that overclocks to 933 (7x133).Its a retail FCPGA, btw. But, if the overclock fails, i'll be stuck with a 33-MHz slower, and more importantly a 100FSB instead of a 133FSB processor...

2) Get the PIII733 since it costs just 3 bucks more. With this option I get a default 133FSB and a faster default (733) rating...but this default 733MHz CPU seems not to o'c very well.

So there....decisions decisions Which option seems better, 1) or 2) ?

chances are you'll be able to get at least 840mhz out of it at 120 fbs

I've only had one P3 700E not do 933 and it was a CA2 stepping (it did 130MHz FSB@1.85V). I've built about 5 systems now with 700E (100MHz FSB), 2 slot 1 and 3 FCPGA. The slot 1's were CBO steppings and did just over a gig @ 1.85V (1 of the FCPGA systems did the same) and the other two did 1.1GHZ@1.85V (CCO steppings). So from my own experience, I'd say go for a 700E and if you can get a CCO stepping processor.

Most retailers aren't very happy about selling you a CPU with a specific stepping. Talk to compuwhiz1 (another user at Anandtech). He has sold a number of pieces to other anandtechers and he seems receptive to getting cpus with specific steppings.

I can buy from someone overseas like you said...but shipping costs would be very high.

Anyways, are the CPUs with these steppings retail or OEM? So stepping cCO corresponds to SL#:SL4CH or SL4M7...are these retail or OEM SL#'s? I assume these are FCPGA CPU's , right?

Slot 1 CPU's with stepping cBO or SL# SL45Y or SL3XX would be more or less as overclockable as the flip chip variety, correct?

Btw, you can set the FSB and the memory clock to different speeds(asynchronous), ie. FSB can be 100Mhz, while memory clock is at 133MHz, with the Via-based mobos for the P3. Is this also true for the Intel 815E/EP chipset-based motherboards?

Does the performance and overclockability of VIA-based PIII motherboards (694x NOT the slower 693) match those of Intel-based chipsets, i815e/ep and the good ol' BX?
