This may give you some idea, even though the Mobile P3 will be faster due to the 512KB of L2 Cache running at full speed. This may also help see some difference.

i still cant get a good idea, the PII M i'm looking at is 1.2 ghz, the extra 200 mhz + cache should have quite an effect on performance

i would compare the 1.2 tualatin 512kb processor to maybe a 1.8 to 2ghz P4 northwood
they were pretty powerfull when compared to the P4

but this isn't taking into account the performance hits you might take from the memory/chipset subsystems

also the comparison would be highly dependent on the kind of apps/games you are running

seti and anything that relies heavily on the alu and fpu should benefit from the lower ipc of the tualatin

where as media encoding/decoding, anything that is heavily optimized for sse2 and anything that likes HT will benefity from the P4 and it's whole "design philiosophy"

the turning point for games didn't really go to the P4 till the northwood core broke 2ghz imho (when compared to the tualatin and the k7)

hope this helps

i would say when comparing on a strickly mobile basis
the 1.2 P3 tualatin laptops would perform around the same ballpark as a 400fsb 1.8ghz P4m with ddr mem

those programs you plan on running shouldn't be too demanding
mozilla for example would prob load faster if you opted for a 5200rpm hardrive rather than a few 100 mhz

keep in mind tho that your upgrade path with the P3 is basically non-existant since they don't make any new ones anymore

the P4 runs really hot in a laptop
almost hot enough to burn you

you might wanna check out the centrino offerings too
