I have a toshiba satellite pro 4280zdvd.
Currently installed is a pIII mobile 500mhz, 100mhz fsb, 1.6v s-spec #SL43P

Processor I have that does not post:
PIII mobile 850 100mhz FSB, 1.6/1.35v s-spec# sl4ag

The only difference i see with these processors is the Thermal Guideline. Besides the possibility of the processor being dead, what could cause this?

I think your laptop uses the i400BX chipset, in which case I would have thought it would work. I don't know much about the mobile P3's of the era so I shall bump your post anyhow.

There is a possibility the 850 processor works.

I have upgraded several Dell C500/C600 notebooks which also takes a 100MHz P3 mobile (micro).

After trying several cpu's, I found out that some steppings were just incompatible and did not boot. This same problem also showed up after replacing the c500/600 motherboard. The processor which was known working refused to boot on the new motherboard. Switching cpu's with a similar laptap and both processors worked.

I don't have any compatibility guidelines in reference to steppings, it is more or less trial and error. Unless the manufacturer lists cpu stepping requirements, which isn't likely.

The stepping and cpu id string are different, so it could be a bios problem. also the 850 has speedstep technology, and the 500 does not. Make sure you have the latest bios, it can help if there is updated cpu code included with it.

Even with the BIOS upgrade, the system still doesn't post. It appears to be a stepping incompatibility.

Thanks for all the input though- Learned quite a bit.
