I'm looking to upgrade from a Cel 566@850 to a PIII 700. If I buy a oem 700 what is my chance of getting it to run @ 133MHz bus speed. I can get one locally for about $150 but for $50 more I can get one from Compuwiz that I know will run at 930MHz. My 566 is from him and has been flawless at default voltage. I know I'll have to upgrade to P133 ram and can get 256mb sticks for $110 at the same place. Any opinions on where I should go based on probabilities of success.
Thanks
Bill

Well, overclocking is a game of chance. You can either buy one that's guaranteed to run at the overclocked speed (like from compuwiz) or you can save the $50 and take your chances with an OEM chip. Although if it IS a cC0 PIII, your chances of hitting 933mhz+ are very good. But then again, nothing is certain. $50 isn't all that much for piece of mind.

Yes, it's a chance, but I think most any 700 MHz PIII/100MHz FSB has an excellent chance of running at 133. I have not worked with one that couldn't.

I've bought two PIII 700E cBO chips in a row that would not OC to 933Mhz. The first one would boot to windows but would crash after 10 minutes of playing Quake III. The second wouldn't even POST.
