PII vs. Celeron question

i am kind of ignorant on this, so if anyone has any imput i wouls appreciate it 🙂
i know the origional celerons were PII's with half/no cache, but how would the coppermine celerons compare to pentium II's on a clock for clock basis? i'm curious 🙂

From my undertstanding celerons are just PIII's w/ half the L2 cache disabled. Also the celeron still runs on a 66mhz fsb.

ON a clock for clock basis the celerons get spanked by pIII's For the above reason as well as because the L2 cache of the celeron is 4way set associative while the pIII's are 8 way. WHat this means is that there are half as many data lines to the L2 on the celeron as on the pIII. Which will decrease performance significantly.

The new celeron 2's surely stomp the PII, but nothing close to a pIII.

I'm running my cel2 566@850 and it runs circles around my pII400 (yeah I know, bad comparison) But I would much prefer to have a pIII in the 700 range, as it would spank my cel2@850.

It also depends what you do with it. A 633 Celeron II will surf the web and type letters all day long. It will also crack RC5 (the highest and best use of a CPU ) at the same rate as a comparably clocked PIII. Want top framerates in QIII, then you need a PIII.

I see no difference in my PIII system and the 566celery I built, in real world usage. Sandra scores however show the 566 Celeron2 at 933 kicking my P3's ass running at 770. The memory bandwith however on the P3 is alot higher as it is running at 140mhz vs. the Celery system only at 110mhz. I get about 10fps more on the P3 using the 3dfish screen saver. Both systems are the same accept for the cpu.
