Adding second poll

Update:

Called the Security Company and informed them off the open network. He was an older gentlemen and prob didnt understand what I was talking about. Told me he would call is partner and get back with me about securing the network for them.

Damn you all for giving me a conscience, but Karma owes me one now.

Cliffs:

1. Moved into new house
2. Cut some bills... No more Cable or Internet
3. Laptop connects to Unsecure Network
4. Turns out its a Local Security Companies Network
5. Work Orders, Phone numbers, and few other items on thier server

So basically anyone with wifi can access thier files with no trouble. No passwords, and using MS Home has network.

Now, If I inform them.... Most likely they will cut off my free internet.
On the other hand, they are a security company, they should know this stuff anyways

Tell them and you don't get illegal free internet. Don't tell them and you get free illegal internet, and maybe they find out and then you're really fvcked.

You don't know what to do? Don't have kids please your DNA is defective.

That's unnecessarily harsh.

Maybe, but it's a simple ethics question. My guess is that this is a fake thread for someone to do an ethics style poll for school. At least that's my hope.

The only IT professional in the thread so far?

Anonymously inform them of their security flaw if it's a huge company. If it's a smaller company, try to get in and talk to the highest ranking person in the company about it... and maybe ask for free access to their network once they fix it

is there sensitive customer information on there?

if so, how would you feel if you found out that thousands of their customers were the victims of identity theft because their network was unsecured and you could have helped prevent those crimes?

heh, honeypot for the win.

OP - this is an age old strategy. Go ahead an inform them. They're just trying to attract bees with honey.

Be fully aware that ever single pacekt you send is captured, logged and stored forever.

I'd just use the internet for anything & everything that did not include any personal information or passwords.

Well, unless you can work out a deal with them to atleast cover your internet expenses in exchange for securing their network.

What's so funny is people are accustomed to hopping onto wireless networks. Then triumph "WOOT! I've got free intarweb!".

Little do they know that the owners of these networks are a little more security concious then the user is. What is even better is they can log/proxy all your transactions. My what I could do if I wasn't a good guy.

Then your guess would be wrong. Just a 28yr old guy with 2 kids trimming the fat off bills to make up for the recent move and Xmas.
