What's the story behind that anyways?

I'm Canadian... :p

took over an island (durign WWII), lots of people died during the invasion...they put up the flag. Or something along those lines.

Japs didn't want to give up Iwo Jima (Iwo Jima = last island til japan?). Marines came in and fought it out for awhile. Massive casualties on both sides. Japanese fight to death. Marines winnar.

I think Okinawa was the last.
