Picture Gallery software for Web pages

me and my friends are making a webpage with a bunch of pictures on it and we were wondering if there was any free software to make picture galleries for our page. We just want to be able to put thumbnails on the page with some text underneath, and then you can click on the thumbnail and the picture can be inlarged. We really just want to keep all the pictures neat and organized. If you could let me now it would be great

thanks,
chris

acdsee does it but it's not very free. it's a free trial. if you can spend some money the dreamweaver+fireworks combo is really good for making them. i used them and it's great.

I know the perfect thing.

It fits your needs perfectly, is fast loading, doesn't require anything but a browser to view, and its SUPER easy.

You'll need Photoshop though. Got access? Maybe you can get it from kazaa lite and then erase it after your 'evaluation' period.

Go to File->Automation->Web photo gallery.

bam.

I use gallery and have found it exceedingly easy to use. In my experience, it is also much easier to administer an online photo album with Gallery than with Photoshop's album maker. The great thing about Gallery is that adding pictures to an existing album is REALLY easy (just uploading a pic, it takes care of the thumbnails for you etc), you can add comments, have people leave their own comments, show the number of times a picture has been viewed, etc. Photoshop is too inflexible and not worth the trouble IMO.

Plus, Gallery is open-source which means FREE. Which is alot better than pirating a $600 program like others in this thread have suggested

The only thing is that you need a webhost that will support PHP and does not run in "safe mode". This excludes most free hosts. If you have the host, and the time, I highly reccommend Gallery.

gallery is great! cant wait for Gallery 2.0 to come out.. it's going to be database (mysql) driven.. 🙂

i saw your link to gallery. Can you put more than one column of pictures using gallery? in photoshop, you can put lots of pictures on a page. it will just make an .html page with maybe 10 pictures by 10 pictures. At the bottom it will put 'next' and previous links. you can click to enlarge thumnail, which it makes automatically too.

i luv PS 🙂

Here is one of the most basic layouts you can do with PS: www.btrig.com/Gallery52w.

what's the best cross-platform way of doing this for something static? I'm sending out portfolios and coding it in HTML so it will work in mac, so I need an HTML professional gallery that can run just off the CD.

does anyone know if gallery works for something on a CDROM? the notes mention it doesn't work on certain OS's so it doesnt sound cross platform compatible or able to work off a CDROM but i figured I'd ask.
