You ask a question, but you give two answers to it. Where did they come from if not from your personal experience?

I almost never pressure anyone for pics but I'm happy if they choose to share. Many times seeing someone's pic will totally change my opinion of them and they lose a lot of my respect. Sometimes I wonder how anyone could post a picture of themselves looking like such a fruit.

As far as women go, I notice many guys are fooled by the makeup, hair, and photo angle. They don't notice the woman is truly average or ugly. Like Carmen Electra for example. Snapshots can fool you. You need video to make a good assessment of looks.
