Bit on a deal for a nikkor 55-200mm F4-5.6 lens for $150 shipped. It was a beautiful Sunday here in Italy. So I decided to go for a walk around the neighborhood.

None of the pics have been edited in photoshop. Tell me what you think, just remeber I'm still an uber noob when it comes to photography.

Gear = Nikon D40+55-200mm lens.

Just remember next time you are posting, that we have a sub forum dedicated to Digital Cameras and people flaunting their pics. :)

Nice shots...

I've gotta admit most of those were set to manual focus. And I was trying to get macro shots by physically moving to the limit of the lens's focus range.

Autofocus will work fine near the close limits of the lens's focus range as long as you keep an AF point over your subject. If you're going to shoot handheld, I recommend setting the lens to AF mode.

I would not suggest trying to do handheld macro with a telephoto lens set to MF (manual focus). You need a tripod to avoid blur and prevent the motion of your hands from shifting the camera out of the proper focus plane.

Of course, the slow aperture of your lens, mediocre pentamirror viewfinder, and non-MF optimized focusing screen of the D40 don't really help in manual focusing, either...

Server seems horribly slow... I'll try to take a look again later.

None of this should be able to prevent someone from handheld macros or close-ups. I do 300mm w/Raynox DCR-150 pretty regularly, handheld. ;) Ya just gotta want to do it, and practice!
