*PICS* I bought a PStwo (the new small one)!

With all those USB ports I can't believe they wouldn't have a system for external HD. By the time it comes out in the US, the PS3 will be here.

because there are still many more games for the PS2 worth playing then the xbox, there are 4 games worth having on the xbox. Halo 1,2, Fable and Ninja Gaiden

only reason i have an xbox is because of Halo 2

Like what? I think the PS2 makes a good second console for very young children(they get in to the 8-9 year old range and it drops to third or fourth depending on if you include hand helds)- I'm picking up our third PS2(first PSTwo) for my middle son and I haven't seen anything worth getting excited about on the PS2 that isn't already out or coming out for the XBox(except for young kids, they are doing quite well there). Three Cubes, Three Xbox and Three PS2s(to go along with five GBAs) in my house after this holiday season- we have them all and the PS2s are without a doubt the least used consoles in the house for everyone.

Read errors on PS2's? Dang, why does this remind me of the original PlayStation? Mine worked for less than three years before the laser developed a severe case of dyslexia and couldn't read game discs reliably. I had to open the thing up and adjust the laser power, that worked for about 3 months before the whole thing totally died. Absolutly shameful that it appears that Sony learned nothing and the build quality on the PS2 is just as bad as the original - glad I didn't buy a PS2.

3 years is pretty good actually, i havent had a CD-Rom drive/burner last more then 18 months, the xbox has its drive and HDD issues as well, nothing is perfect

my PS2 is 3 years old, it has no issues whatsoever with games

I have (had?) a bad tendency to collect games, consoles, etc. (still have an intellivision and an Atari 400 stashed away somewhere in the pile, for example.) Anyways, I always consider it a good idea to have a "backup" console if you have a sizable collection of games for that system, and the drive decided to poop out on you several years down the road, at which point you simply cannot purchase them anymore. So when the systems are going for cheap, make sure to buy an extra one for the stockpile. 😛

That being said, the poor quality/longevity of the Sony units and now the X-Box are quite disappointing. I still have PC-Engine CD-ROM, Saturn, 3DO, JagCD, and they still all work just fine. (Well, the power-supplied died on the Jag base unit, need to find another one somewhere.)

I was thinking of picking up a PSTwo, but these rumors of overheating are a bit concerning. I know that they shrunk the chipset, and the unit only has a small internal fan directly over the chipset, instead of a larger one on the outside of the case. I wouldn't want to buy one if they are going to die in six months, but they do look really nice for being so small.

PS. Does anyone know if the "swap magic"-style discs work in this unit, seing as it has a flip-top lid as factory stock? I prefer to play with back-ups now, after having my Saturn 'In the Hunt' and PSX 'Tekken 3' original discs scratched-up, during ordinary use. Quite annoying, never happened with my PC-Engine CD games.

Also, is there any difference in compatibility with the original PSX games with the PSTwo, as compared to the PS2?

that's pretty swank. I didn't realize it would be that small.

once they've been out for awhile, I might pick one up on e-bay so I can have a PS2 in my bedroom as well as in the living room 🙂

I cannot think of a single reason why I would want to do that (and dont say Halo, b/c I'm not a fan). Besides, I still have GTA:SA to play...and I aint do'n that on an Xbox for a while.

GTA SA
Jak & Daxtar 1-3
Kill Zone
Ratchet & Clank 1-3
all the Final Fantacy games
MGS 3
MGS 4 - yes its comming
Devil May Cry 1-3
God Of War
GT4
SOCOM 1-2

San Andreas is coming to the Box
J&D and R&C are good for very young children- nothing against the style of game but the difficulty of them is way too low to offer a challenge to anyone that's any good(we already have the first two for both- picking up UYA and J3 soon)
FF games pale in comparison to KoTOR and Fable
MGS series on the PS2 to date has been crap(no idea how Snake Eater will turn out, but not off to a good start)
DMC 1 was fairly decent, didn't think two was any good
Kill Zone is a mediocre shooter by nearly everyone's standards
SOCOM is a wannabe CounterStrike- didn't find it anything to get excited about
GoW might be OK, but like Getaway it could be complete crap too
GT4 is the only title on your list that I find worth mentioning as a PS2 edge over the Box(and then you could argue RS2/PGR2 although I do think GT4 will end up having the edge for this one)

3 years is pretty good actually, i havent had a CD-Rom drive/burner last more then 18 months, the xbox has its drive and HDD issues as well, nothing is perfect

I would change optical drive brands if I were you, I have numerous drives from the prior millenium that still work without issue. None of them are Sony drives, but optical drives regularly last significantly longer then 18 months.

i have used Liteon, Plextor, Yamaha, Sony, Pioneer & toshiba

the plextor is by far the best of them all, my Pioneer slot-load DVD drive stoped reading stuff after about a year i just replaced it w/ a liteon, my yamaha and liteon burners crapped out after 8 months, the sony lasted almost 18 months before it exploded a disk, all these drives were used in a comp that gets extensive useage of the drives, burning/ ripping / reading of files ect

i have a CD rom in my file server thats YEARS old but i have used it like 2 times to install windows and linux, so i dont count it because i never use it,

now about the games I listed
GTA SA - yea in what 6 months to a year?
J&D, RaC you say are for kids, ok i can see that but they are also 2 of the best platformer series ever made, im 23 and love them both, not exactly a little kid,
FF is a RPG, KOTOR is NOT, neither is Fable, different catagorie, also JOTOR is on the PC
MGS2 was not crap IMO 3 is supposed to be good
DMC 1 was great 2 was less great but still good
SOCOM is better then CS because well it doesnt suck in every way possiable
True on GOW but from what i have read it shoudl be sweet
Kill Zone will be better then most peopel think, it looks amazing and teh gameplay shoudl be sweet

Others ill add
Wanda & the Giants - from the makers of ICO one of the best PS2 games to date, shoud be awsome as well
Silent Hill 4
Psi Ops
Rtype & Gradius - yes old school bust still cool as sh!t
Goldeneye Rogue Agent
Blood Will tell
Neo Contra
Bloodrayne 2

bahh... games on my PC stomp all games for the PS2 and the box. Sure I might have to wait a few months for a same released on either platform before aa PC version is available. But the reverse is also true. Even at the lowest settings for my PC... I am more than certain the graphic's on Far Cry will be clearly superior to that of the PS2 and XBox when they are released for the two platforms. Not to mention more gaming as console games are mostly stipped.
Console games do have one big advantage though, multiplayer on 1 system. Not many offering for the PC, and the ones I found kinda lack. But there is always the internet to solve the multiplayer issue so long as your friends are not at your house.

Getting back on topic, I think it is a great deal smaller than the original. Just slightly bigger than the smallest they could have made it (about 3" tooas a rough guess, as for thinkness... I dunno... but if I were to get one, the original is too small for my entertainment center anyways 😛)
If only if the box or PS2 would come metallic silver from the factory, or brushed aluminum, would I consider getting one.

J&D, RaC you say are for kids, ok i can see that but they are also 2 of the best platformer series ever made, im 23 and love them both, not exactly a little kid

I have nothing against platformers at all, the PS2 offerings are simply far too easy. I've played pretty much all of the major platformers this generation and while J&D and R&C are better then anything on the Box for platforming(Blinx....yech), the Cube obliterates the PS2 there.

FF is a RPG, KOTOR is NOT, neither is Fable, different catagorie, also JOTOR is on the PC

KoTOR and Fable are both very much RPGs, I'm not even sure how I should respond to this exactly- I have no idea why you would claim otherwise. KoTOR uses the rule system from the original RPG(D&D).

MGS2 was not crap IMO 3 is supposed to be good

The gameplay of MGS has always been pretty weak, MGS2 took the story element and even made that horrible(some air head instead of Snake...?).

SOCOM is better then CS because well it doesnt suck in every way possiable

I think you would find that almost noone agrees with you there.

Kill Zone will be better then most peopel think, it looks amazing and teh gameplay shoudl be sweet

Killzone is out now.

Wanda & the Giants - from the makers of ICO one of the best PS2 games to date, shoud be awsome as well

ICO I would have given you as a good reason for owning a PS2, we'll have to wait and see how W&G turns out.

Silent Hill 4

A) It isn't that good
B) It isn't that good on the XBox either 😉

A fairly decent game from what I have heard, although mainly I've talked to people who played it on the XBox.

Rtype & Gradius - yes old school bust still cool as sh!t

I'd say those are two good ones to bring up, XBox doesn't have anything directly comparable.

Goldeneye Rogue Agent

Shipping for the XBox same time as PS2.

Blood Will tell

Quite sub par game based on all the reviews. Haven't played it myself, don't have any desire to either.

Neo Contra

Another sub par game based on all the reviews.

Bloodrayne 2

On the Box.

A good deal of the games you listed this time are already on the XBox, some are coming to the XBox and then you have a couple of good ones. I don't think it compares to the lengthy list of titles that the XBox has that the PS2 doesn't in terms of quality.

SinfulWeeper-

Sure I might have to wait a few months for a same released on either platform before aa PC version is available.

Fourteen of the top twenty games of all time on GR's database have never come out for the PC, not didn't make it over for a few months- never made it over. One of them may in the future, the rest likely never will. The PC stomps all over consoles in terms of visuals right now- and I wouldn't give up my PC for gaming- I just refuse to miss out on a killer title because it is on platform X. Own em all, and you need make no compromise.

how did this turn into a console fanboy thread?

btw, xbox with the hd kit...480p/720p/dd5.1 games

When consoles put out HDTV resolutions w/o skipping, I will w/o a doubt buy one. But for now, I am spoiled. Short of a long stay away from console games after the SNES and getting back into gaming on the PC (bought 25 titles)... I must say I can not go back to a console, the graphics just are not there, games seem to be stripped (not graphics, but the GAME itself) and definately take longer to load. From a cold boot on my PC to having a game up and running takes 37 seconds (providing the CD is in the drive). No console out there, short of the 8 and 16 bit systems can do that.

Don't get me wrong. When I am at a friends house I might play some games on their XBox or PS2, but the graphics are repulsive, load times far too long... and I have to put up with their wife(s) or kid(s) bothering us while trying to play. So far I have converted roughly 70% of my freinds to the PC gaming arena. The remaining 30% have either no internet, or a slow P166MMx system unsuitable for any good gaming. A mere $199 + shipping will get the guts of a system good enough to run most modern games, with better graphics than a console... just not a good 'gaming' computer where you run @ 1600*1200 or something.
And if a game coming out on console can not be made to go onto a PC, that is usually a sign that it has a poor graphics engine. In which case I would not buy it anyways.

But I dont like to argue about consoles. I just dont like them. Too slow and poor graphics vs my PC. My friends have them and that is good enough for me if I am @ their house and they wanna game.

I did the same, and have no complaints. GTA:SA is the first GTA Ive really liked and this little PS2 is pretty nice too.

Glad I hooked up on this 🙂

so the ps2 is no longer cd-tray loaded but via a flip top? doesn't it feel kinda cheap?
otherwise i think im gonna grab myself a slim ps2 too even though i already have one.

OK come on anyone can discredit games with subjective (and not corroborated by any review site) opinions as to their preference to games. The PS2 has the largest list of high caliber exclusive games. And if not exclusive, games that they got much in advance of other systems.

I'll just list some more:

the Ratchet and Clank series
the Jak and Dexter series
Suikoden 3 and 4
the Final Fantasy games (including FF XII)
ICO and it's sequel (mentioned)
Ace Combat 4 and 5
Kingdom Hearts (not everyone's cup of tea)
Xenosaga I and II
Viewtiful Joe 2 (also on Cube)
Dark Cloud 1 and 2
Maximo 1 and 2 (decent, not great)
Castlevania: LOI (should have been better. Symphony of the Night on PS1 was a masterpiece)
Star Ocean (if Japanese RPG's are your thing)
the Onimusha series

etc.

I'm trying to pick and choose exclusives here. The point is that the Xbox has a few good exclusives (Fable, Halo2, etc) but nothing compared to the wealth of exclusives on PS2. You don't have to like all of the titles on the PS2; I certainly don't like all of those times (nor do I play them all for lack of free time). But to dismiss the PS2 as a kiddy system is foolish. Just because you (probably) bought an Xbox, doesn't mean you have to justify it by just dismissing the other consoles as 'kiddie,' etc.

Besides, the Gamecube is the system that is traditionally dismissed as a kiddie system! What's wrong with you!! 😉

Btw I own a Cube and a PS2. I got the Cube mainly for Metroid Prime and Zelda. The PS2 was for the Japanese RPG's which I am playing less and less these days, but used to be my main game interest. The only game on Xbox that I care about is Halo2 (although Panzer Dragoon Orta looked good back when it came out). But I don't go calling the Xbox 2 a worthless PC port system, just because the games don't look interesting to me.

This console generation is ready to come to close and people are still talking abut what system is better? At under $100 per system (used), who the f%#$ cares? Buy all of em and stfu🙂

Sorting through fanboy console war crap while im reading a thread with no such title was old years ago.

Go make another "My console is better than yours" thread and gtfo of this thread🙂 So I can read about this new mini ps2 I just got and not sort through the crap!!!😉

BTW, I had the old model of ps2 and no network adapter. Ill be getting dsl this week and will be able to try out the PS2 online for the first time🙂 Does anyone have any comments on the ps2 online?
