pics 2.0 beta up

  • Thread starter Thread starter
  • Start date Start date

What started as a slow work day ended up as a major overhaul to the site. I was speaking with Sully about some possible changes. Being he is pretty tied up with school I took a crack at upgrading the site. A couple days later I realized it's certainly a 2.0 worthy upgrade.

The beta site is at:

http://beta.bbzzdd.com

Your logins from the old (stable) site will work on the beta site but passwords and profile changes are not shared between the beta and stable site. The stable site will be up until 2.0 goes out of beta, at the time I will switch everything over.

All pics are still stored on pics.bbzzdd.com, so your image lists are the same and those changes are shared between the beta and stable sites. Be sure to let me know about any bugs or features you would like to see.

New Features:

  • New interface. Easier to navigate, less linking around to login/upload.
  • New user home. Clearer view of uploaded images. Allows multiple deletes.
  • Persistent login. If you choose you can save your session in a cookie so you do not have to log in each time.
  • Last 20 image gallery. Shows thumbnails of last 20 images uploaded.
  • Database driven. All lists reflect accurate data. No more dead links in last 5 pics, etc.
  • Easier upload. Shows thumbnail of image once uploaded along with a hyperlink and FuseTalk code for easier cut & paste.
  • New, forgiving quota system. Will not reject images that go over your quota but will disable further uploads until space is freed.
  • User profile. Work in progress. Not fully functional. Email and URL changing works. Email address cannot be changed yet.
  • Admin interface. Work in progress. Easier banning, editing, maintenance. Beware 🙂

The site is mostly stable. All uploads are sent to the stable pics site. Last 5 and last 20 lists are not reflected on the stable site and visa-versa. You may see crazy error messages if I am working on the site, but other than that all should be well. Send any bug reports to pics@bbzzdd.com.

Well now it's official 🙁
Nah, it's just that we can't think of anything productive to respond with. Just though of something though. Would it be too much trouble to allow linking from RossMAN's forums?

Ok. I have a bit more bandwidth to play with now. Will do. Do you know all the URLs requests may come from? I am also working on something that not be so rude at blocking hosts by just rejecting the request.

PM RossMAN, I'm not sure about all of the URL's, though I'd think they would all be variants of "forums.gottadeal.com". I doubt that RossMAN's forums will generate a huge amount of bandwidth, it's mostly AT people.

Thanks, that would be cool.

I'm assuming the from URL would be forums.gottadeal.com

Much thanks on the RossMAN's forums addition. I've just thought of something else though (sorry to keep bringing things up). Can you upload with Mozilla now? For some reason Mozilla has kept telling me that my files violate the 8+3 name convention. IE will upload fine though.

Really? I just tried a few pics with Mozilla 1.2.1 and no problems with uploads. What were the filenames?
Dwell - are you coding 2.0, or is Sully?
I coded 2.0 from scratch. It's all based on Sully's good ideas but we wanted to get away from Perl.

Just wanted to say thanks to dwell for his hard work.

You run one of the fastest and most stable pic hosting sites on the web. Thanks again. 🙂

😕 perl runs on everything.
I think he means in the sense that not everyone has the Perl environment setup on their box so it's hard to find a host.

My pleasure. It's what I enjoy doing. Coding and tinkering.

Dammit the beta won't let me login...but regular site works fine (yes my typing is fine thank-you-very-much.) Do I need to register another username?

I've never seen a host anywhere that doesn't support perl scripts... except for maybe those free hosts that don't support any kind of scripting at all.

Looks like your password changed since the import I did this weekend. Try now, I imported the encrypted password from the stable site.
