I also recommend staying with strobe-based lighting as she already has an external flash.

Get her a light stand, an umbrella or soft box and a way to trigger the flash off-camera. (If you want to save money, just get a long sync cord instead of a wireless setup)

She can then use the reflector to bounce light anywhere she wants, and she'll be well on her way.

Strobe flashes are WAY more powerful than continuous lighting.

Can her 580 EX II flash fire a 430EX II without buying the remote trigger?

Thanks for all the input. I started out with 2 stands, 2 brackets and 2 umbrellas. I'll put those under the tree and I'll get her input on the lights.
