So, I'm looking for a 1TB HDD for the new PC for mainly games to go with the 80GB SSD.

My first choice had been the Samsung F3, but now I'm considering the WD Caviar black.

The rest seem to not be quite as good from various reviews in some way like noise (the Hitachi shell shocker last night for example).

But there are a few choices even here.

The first is, you might say 'forget the caviar, go back to the Samsung'. Otherwise:

There's the basic OEM for $100:

There's the retail for $5 more ,I don't know the difference between the 'FALS' and 'LSRTL':

Then woo hoo there's the 74MB cache model I didn't know about until recently for $120:

Thanks for helping pick between the four options.

It's for gaming basically; I'd like quiet and reliable, and performance (access more than sustained) is nice but no need to go crazy.

The Samsung drive has a 3 year warranty versus 5 years for the WD Black drives.

The LSRTL is just a retail version of the FALS. The FAEX is faster than the other WD drive because it has two 500GB platters instead of 3 330GB platters. Whether or not the slight speed boost is worth $20 is up to you, it will make some difference but not a large one.

Thanks guys. The 64MB cache - well you know how it goes, it sounds good.

Speaking of sound, any feedback on which is most quiet of the 4, by how much?

The WD Black performs well, but it is noisy IMHO. If you can fit your most played games onto the SSD that is better and for mass storage if noise is an issue then get a reduced performance quiet drive like the WD greenpower.

Samsung F3s are the best 1tb hdds in terms of speed and reliability.
