I just gpt a cpu MB combo deal a frys, the MB was a $90 retail gigabyte board described as 'ok' they were out of stock on so I picked another and paid the difference.

I got to do a quick googling for recommended mb and found the msi 790fx-gd70 recommended, it cost *80 more $169.95 retail and I got it.

Now I'm checking here for whetther it is the right pick. I expect to run it with a 4870 that might upgrade to the next gen cards mid 2010, and use an ssd. Nothing fancy not sure if I might try to overclock.

The 16x slots for the graphics cards are nice too even though the web said they're only 1-2% fasrer than 8x. Fry's said they don't have any sata 3.0 mb yet.

Any feedback on a solid future proof mb?

Thanks.

That MSI board is the board I'd buy if I were to do a 965 BE build today. It's a great board. (It's an AM3 board thus it requires DDR3 memory, to be sure)

Thanks. Good to hear after the senior ry's guy said he wouldn't pick it though it's ok, he likes the nvidia chip boards. Should the DDR3 play into the decision? I'd bought DDR2 earlier and now will need DDR3.

Don't listen to that guy, anymore. As lopri noted the MSI 790fx-gd70 is on the top of a great many 'enthusiast' lists

IIRC the HD4870 in Crossfire spanks the HD5870 around in quite a number of benchies (but the price and availability is getting a little 'iffy') --- and the 4870s will consume >100w more at load.

So if an HD4870 Crossfire is of interest to you, strike while the opportunity is out there.

As far as your DDR3 I believe the folks at XS are cranking 2000MHz memory with good timings on your motherboard with Corsair and OCZ RAMs ---- with C3 Phenoms easily reaching well beyond 4GHz.

So. Yah done good :D

Thanks. Another senior guy at Fry's was saying ATI is releasing cards in q2 2010 8x faster than the 4870...

On RAM, any specific recommendations? In another thread, someone suggested g.skill 1600 for $91 (they also sell 2000 for #120 and have some other for $96 I haven't figured out the difference yet).

4870's are looking like $160 - better than the $320 I paid (sent $50 rebate too late).

1) I'm normally a little cautious and choose a set which the mobo maker has tested and qualified (and usually back-check at the memory vendor web site by using their 'memory configurator').

That way, if I have questions about something I feel like they have an obligation to respond (since they approved it in the first place - LOL) --- but for the most part just don't have any issues.

2) I also check over at XS and see what the 'enthusiasts' are using, freak out, and then return to number one :D

ok:) so XS is an enthusiast web site, not a RAM brand.

if I add a 2nd 4870, it affects my choice whether to use the antec 3 case w/500W, ok for one 4870 but not two, or the big case and buy a new PS, probably corsair 750W for $100.

I think a single 4870 can handle a 1920x1080 monitor fine, even 65", but you got me thinking about a second, and you mentioned get it now before they are harder to get.

A single HD4870 1Gb will work well, especially if you are willing to tweak your settings down a bit (when necessary in a few games).

With a second card you will be a gaming monster  Price and supply seemingly change daily so move fast if this is your deal!

You can still find a few in the $150-$160 range if you look around. In your case I believe it beats the possibility of an HD 5850 at $300-plus (if you can find one).....

Here is the Corsair 850TX for $100 AR w/ promo code EMCMNLP45.

MSI Is a better board because of the support, Have you ever dealed with asus it is a nightmare. I run a GD-70 with a 965BE. The MSI OC very good and is rock stable.. The mobo is set up very good for crossfire lots of room to work..
