Picking a desk is really proving to be harder than I imagined

I have about 54" in length to work with and no more than 24" in depth. I was hoping to not spend more than $100. I'd like something with at least a little bit of storage. I also figured there's no point shopping anywhere besides online since so many places offer free shipping.

I found some nice desks on Target but, contray to what I just said, the shipping was outrageous ($60+), and they don't carry the desks I liked in my local store anyway.

Walmart has very few good desks for under $100. The ones that are in that price range are mostly just stands, hardly worth calling desks.

The best I have found so far are this one and this one on Staples.com. Do these seem decent for the price? Both have free shipping I believe.

Also, can I trust the posted dimensions? That would suck getting a desk that's too big and having to return to B&M, if they even let you do that.

IMO, the simpler the design, the better the function. I use a small dining table as my desk.

the z-line is nice. my husband has a z-line glass desk and likes it a lot.

we had the hardest time picking out desks also, especially since we wanted both to match. he has the glass one while i have a wooden one. i guess it doesn't matter in the end. it's just a work area.

I had a similar situation trying to fit two desks and some other furniture in a pretty small room. Ended up making the desks myself... bought the legs at Ikea ($20 a set), some birch plywood at Lowe's (I'm thinking about $12 for a 2'x4' precut), some moulding for the three exposed edges (~$5), and a quart of stain/polyurethane combined ($8). The desks look great, and they match the TV stand/radiator cover I built perfectly.

I was too looking for a perfect desk but I settled for one of those cheap $50 desk on sale at Office Depot.
The first one you posted was on sale for $60 not too long ago.

Sorry guys, I have zero power tools skills, if I put one together myself it'd look like something a horse would sh!t out its rear end.

I might have to settle for cheap and craptastic. But would that first one be alright? I'm afraid my tower wouldn't fit in the designated spot.

What don't you guys like about the second one? Think I really should get a simple flat table?

I've had lots of luck with furniture like this. Saves me tons of money, and last for a long time if you put it together correctly.

To build on what Mugs said, if you can use a cordless drill, you can build yourself a desk.
Have Home Depot or whatever make all your cuts for you. I figure you could drill a 2x4 of the appropriate length into the studs. buy some table legs and attach them to the front of a 5/8 or thicker plywood board and then affix the back of the board to your 2x4 support. attach the edging veneer, cut holes for your cables, stain/polyurethane, and you are done. you can use the extra wood for extra shelving or whatever.

Id figure:
$8 for the 2x4s
$40 for the plywood
$5 for the edging veneer
$8 for the stain/polyurethane
$5 for screws
$20 or so on the legs

so for around $90, you get desk built exactly for your space and probably stronger than anything you'd find at target or walmart.
