Picked up Skyrim again this weekend

Unfortunately not until the tail end of my weekend so I only got a few hours to play.

I downloaded nexus mod manager and a few mods:

-More armors
-More weapons
-Ordinator skill tree overhaul (400+ perks)
-Immersive cities/creatures/forts (way more NPC's/mobs)
-Item recycling (smelt weapons/armor to base materials)
-Soul trading (trade dragon souls for perks)
-Apocalypse magic (more spells)
-More enchants
-Alternate start location/story
-iNeed (required to eat/sleep/drink)
-Few patches/HD textures

Having a blast so far, have NO idea what to do, I'm just kind of wandering around killing stuff and making money/trying to level.

Any mods that you have experience on that were epic? What about the quest lines? I have all DLC. I think I did the mages guild and the fighters guild but that was about it, never finished the main questline.

Thoughts?

How big of a performance hit will my machine take with the 4k textures?

How big of a performance hit will my machine take with the 4k textures?

Depends on how much VRAM you've got. Skyrim runs pretty well in general. 2K textures run fine even on a 2GB 750Ti. Even if your system won't do 4k, quite often there's minimal difference between them (examples here and here, "lite" = 2K / "full" = 4k) for a lot of textures vs how much of an improvement both are over stock. Same goes with "8k" textures, I wouldn't bother. Aside from being well into the realms of depreciating gains and ending up an exercise in number chasing, Bethesda's engine's are notoriously flaky and overdoing it can make the game unstable. Also don't turn VSync off for this game. The physics are linked to the frame-rate. Above 60fps, things go wonky.

Edit: Likewise the style of something is just as important. Eg, I found the 2K "Rustic Windows" gave a building more atmosphere than simply "vanilla sharpened to 4k" replacements.

The biggest hit you will take is if you decide to install an ENB (like Realvision) to take the graphics up to "the next level". I only mention that because I see BSim has ELFX listed and those two things often go together. With ELFX/Realvision my system (i5 4690k / GTX970) struggles to maintain 60 fps. It looks awesome, but the wearable lanterns mod becomes a necessity because the lighting is much more realistic and dark places are truly dark.

I started a new run through Skyrim a couple of months ago as well. I never really played the game modded, but there is so much out there I figured it was worth a try. Unfortunately I got sidetracked by a different game, but Skyrim is still pretty fun. I actually stopped playing Witcher 3 because I realized I like Skyrim better.

I'm a big fan of the Frostfall survival mod. It adds camping, exposure effects, packable tents, camp fires, etc.

Played through the vanilla game and enjoyed it. Would love to do another play through, but man so many games and so little time. I was watching YT videos the past few days on mods, some are just freaking incredible. Mods weekly or something, might give you some more ideas.

This thread reminded me that I picked up Dragonborn on a Steam sale and have yet to even fire it up. Skyrim is such a radically different game when modded that it still amazes me.

I started a new game the other day, one mod that I like alot is the "more loot" mod. I've been trying to get rid of the 700000 carry weight mod that is installed, but I have yet to be able to get it off of the system. Just trying to be less of a hoarder in the game.

I just downloaded it on Steam last night but didn't have time to fire it up. Steam has me at 26 hours into it, the last time I can remember playing though was 2-3 years ago. My brother has been telling me to reinstall this and start playing it again with all the mods, so this thread is now a good resource for me to look into. Thanks!

WELL now... that changes things. I hate mod management so anything that makes it as straightforward and easy as possible, count me in!

Looks like I'll have to get some of these great mods so it'll hold my interest long enough to finally *finish* this game! I've restarted a dozen times only to lose interest after too much grinding to increase my forging skills. I swear I would even have *dreams* of searching for ores.

2 Hours walking to riverwood and whiterun (I got sidetracked by a deer and stumbled across bandits)
2 hours getting the golden claw
I returned the golden claw and accidentally sliced the guys sister in the neck with my sword (I don't even use swords, wtf?) so I called it a day after that.

I am intrigued if it is (I glanced at it on my phone). I'm still leaning towards doing a complete playthrough of at least the main story line before I do a complete overhaul.

The above are mandatory for modding. Alco MCM to manage and tweak some mods. I always follow Gopher's videos on YouTube when modding . One other thing. I sometimes find Nexus MM does not always arrange Mods in the correct order...at least that was my experience with Fallout NV and Skyrim. I do not know your expertise at gaming, but Skyre and Requiem make the game more difficult. I agree that a first playthrough with limited mods is a good idea. Also Tes5Edit is good for merge patches and cleaning.
