Picked up Operation Flashpoint again

I played the original OF a couple times when I was a kid; my brother loved it and it just seemed really complicated to me at the time. I started playing it again a couple days ago and all I could say was "wow." This game is awesome. I stopped playing Dragon Rising because it was running too slowly for how good it looked (and there were some game-stopping bugs). This just feels like a totally different game.

The maps and missions are well-made, the squad components work well, and the weapons act somewhat realistically (except for the laser-like rocket launchers). The AI isn't half bad, either - they actually try to flank you without any scripting (a la Call of Duty).

I know I'm late to the party, but it's awesome.

Where did you get it? GoG had it for a little while, but no longer. I lost my CD, and have been wanting to play the game for probably 10 years now.

My brother had the game of the year edition, so I just borrowed it. After a quick google search, it looks like Amazon has it, as do some other e-sellers.

OP - Dragon Rising is NOT the successor to Operation Flashpoint, that title goes to ARMA and ARMAII.

Dragon Rising is just the IP, the guys that made the original are the same behind the ARMA series FYI.

I stopped trying to play OpFlash recently when I couldn't install the patches due to the asinine DRM not recognising my (legit) disc.

I disagree - OF DR has a lot in common with OpFlash - way more than most people are willing to admit for some reason. I was an OpFlash fan, but never played the campaign due to the extremely buggy and retarded missions - on the other hand, the campaign in OF DR is a lot of fun.

ARMA sucks ass.

I used to LOVE to play that game with 2 other friends...we would play some of the 'scenarios', I can't recall what they were called...

I always remember how the Fucking AI could kill you from anywhere...

you would be sneaking around and all of the sudden boom you are dead...and then the kill cam floats around to some AI guy 2 miles away...

We had a blast though after a while...we went gansta style...grabbed a jeep...and we were doing drive by's

The original OPF was coded by Bohemia Interactive Studios, published by Codemasters.
ARMA and ARMAII are also coded by Bohemia Interactive Studios.
All using different iterations of the Real Virtuality engine..and done by the same people.

Dragon rising is coded by Codemasters, using not only a different engine, but also totally different people...you are just talking FUD, so take a dosis of reality here:

Operation Flashpoint is such a great game, I might have to go and find my CD now. I don't think I ever finished the campaign I spent most of my time making ridiculous battles with the mission editor.

I got to the point where I was in a M60 trying to take out about 12 enemy tanks, and never was able to do it. I did love that game though.

Wrong. As usual.

Nice "argument" :hmm:
But is that your but-hurt way of saying you where wrong?

Because the only thing Dragon Rising got in common with OPF...is the name...an IP.
The coders, the gameplay, the playstyle, the engine from OPF have evolved into ARMA and ARMAII.

But keep your delusions...the facts are out now..and you are the weakest link...enjoy your console-game 🙂

OFP DR was such a disappointment. It was hyped up but never lived up to it and ruined the OFP name. With so many limitations you can easily see it was a console game first and just ported over to PC.

I still remember the first time I played the original OFP where you got left behind enemy lines. I was running from patches of trees to the next trying to stay out of sight from all the Russians that seem to be at every hilltop around me. My heart rate didn't go down until I was finally picked up.

I bought Dragon Rising when it went on sale for $5 on Steam. Wasn't that bad, but they made it arcady, yet kept the shitty/clunky controls. And my guys kept respawning out of nowhere.

Operation Flashpoint was good, but it was shit in many ways. Multiplayer co-op was full of elitists who took the game too seriously. Campaign was actually good though.

Armed Assault had the worst SP campaign of the three. Only redeeming quality was the Evolution co-op mod. That thing was awesome and I spent many hours just driving trucks around to fix stuff people got blown up in.

Right now I'm kind of stuck on the "After Montaign" (spelling?) mission in the original. I know where the enemy is coming from in the woods, but I can still barely go 100 meters without dying. The AI seems to be almost too good at shooting.

AFAIR they come from 2 directions...from the wood...and over the hilltop to your left.
I stayed out of the trees, took out the tangos on the hills first, then formed a line and took out the tangos in the forrest.

Sometimes pushing forward is a not good idea.
