Picked up a new laptop on black Friday

No Lifer
It's a Toshiba Satellite. 1.5GHz Celeron w/256MB RAM (well, 64MB is dedicated to video so it's more like 192MB RAM), a bright 15" XGA screen, CD-RW/DVD drive and it's lighter and slimmer than my current laptop. I paid $750 less a $100 mail in rebate.

Anyway, I'm upgrading the memory to 1GB but I'm having trouble swapping out the CD drive for a DVD RW drive I managed to pick up for free from a friend of mine through work. I've been trying to figure out how to get the old drive out but it's a freaking mystery.

Model #L25-S119. I've been searching around online for a couple days and even called Toshiba. Of course they advised that I take it to an authorized service center but there isn't one close enough to me. I'd really like to do this myself if possible. Do I have to tear this thing completely apart to get the existing drive out?

Well, it could be screwed in under the keyboard, under a removeable panel on the bottom, or you may have to take the entire back off. or all of the above.

Hows the battery life? I heard it could get 4 hours with the normal battery...

About an hour or so. Not very good. I think the bright display contributes greatly to this. I don't really stray far from the kitchen though so that wasn't really a concern for me.

You paid $750 for that on BF? You got ripped man

Anyway, what's the full model #? L25-S119...? It should S1192, S1193, etc.

Take a look here maybe:

With $100 mail in rebate. So, that makes it $650. What's so bad about that price?

I have already been to that site and called toshiba. No luck. Toshiba just told me that they didn't have detailed instructions on how to remove the optical drive. Just that I should take it to a toshiba warranty center or if I opened the case that I would void the warranty.

Not to rub it in, but on BF I bought this L25-S1193 and only paid $199 plus tax with a $180 12 month Aol contract at CC.
That's why its a bad price 😉

As to the optical drive, wish I could help more. The best suggestion I have is to carefully and slowly disassemble as much as possible. Try to place the screws in a neat, clean area where you can sort of arrange them in chronological order -- from the first to the last you've taken out. That will help in re-assembling. I also highly recommend getting the proper size screwdrivers, as the last thing you want to do is strip those teeny-ass screws.

Good luck man

Don't forget to use a static control wristband.... This is a very dry time period, which can lead to more static electricity....

I just wanna say, if you are happy with ur lappy, that's all that counts....

I am happy with it. Don't want or need any AOHell contracts either so I'm not complaining. I've noticed the static problems. I have 1GB of memory coming today for it so I guess I'll break out the wristband this afternoon.
