Ugh, Falllout 3 is not like Oblivion is it? D: Not a fan of that game.

KT

It uses the same engine, so some things may "look" familiar (in the UI, not the world), but it's a totally different game. I got bored with Oblivion somewhat quickly, but really really enjoyed FO3.

Ok good. Yeah, I bought Oblivion after all the praise I read everywhere, but I slogged through about 4 or 5 hours of the game before shutting it off and selling the game. Not my cup of tea.

Er well, FO3 may be more enjoyable, but there are A LOT of similarities between it and Oblivion. I certainly would be careful recommending it to anyone who didn't like Oblivion.

When it first came out it was basically referred to as an Oblivion re-skin. Similar animations, Bethesda still couldn't do combat very well, huge landscape with unimaginative dungeons, dumb ai, etc. NV has certainly built on it, but it's roots are still easily recognizable.

Ok, good to know. Looks like I will pick up ME for now and when the time comes I will pick-up the regular Fallout 3 since it will be probably be super cheap and it would not be a big deal if I disliked it. Presumably there is no demo?

Mass Effect, definitely. The story, environments, characters, and dialogue are simply amazing. The combat is a little clunky, but not to the point where it diminishes the game. (For me, anyway.)

it makes sense to play NV now and if you like it and have time later, then play original FO:3 afterwards. Plus, you may finish NV (depending on how fast or slow you are) only to be greeted by something else: an expansion, FO4, Elder Scrolls 5, and want to play that instead of FO3. To do them chronologically could possibly leave you in a constant state of playing catch up.
You're better off doing them in the original order. The older game is less likely to decline in price further and already comes bundled with all of the DLC (FO3: GOTY). It isn't quite as good, but you get a lot more for your buck. Next year I'm sure you will be able to buy a FO: NV GOTY edition that is a lot cheaper.

Of the games mentioned in this thread, I would rank them like so:
1) ME2. Great combat, good story.
2) FO: NV. Good combat, good story.
3) ME. Okay combat, great story.
4) Bioshock 2. Good combat, okay story.
5) Bioshock 1. Good combat, okay story.
6) FO3. Good combat, one of the worst storylines I have ever encountered.

Keith - I played Oblivion (200 hrs or so!) and FO3 definitely reminded me of it, although the environment is obviously different (post apocalyptic). A very similar meet NPC, go here, do this quest stuff. I enjoyed it to a degree but it didn't strongly hold my interest.

Playing ME now, just getting into it. Much better story. I'm not one for space games, but its actually roping me in. I am not skilled at combat yet, but am playing it on "normal" to keep my sanity. Its really not hard at this level, and I can actually pay attention to details. Bioware put a lot of backstory detail into the game and I'm actually digging it. Its nice to be able to enjoy the details, knowing you're not in for another 200 hours of slogfest.

Got ME on sale and have spent a few hours and I'm liking it a lot. Reminds me of kotor. Will definitely get ME2 if I see it on sale on steam or D2D over the holidays.

Dont get me started on why didnt they finish up KOTOR with a third game!!! What a shame they turned it into an MMO.
Anyway, I would definitely recommend either of the Mass Effect games. I finished them both, and am really wondering how they will be able to finish up with Mass Effect 3. Hope they dont come up with some lame ending or leave things up in the air.
Personally, I like more linear type games that have a definite storyline and a climatic ending, so Mass Effect is more my type of game than Fallout NV, but I might try that game sometime when it gets cheaper.
