Just finished Batman AA and loved it; as I stated in another thread it was the first SP game I had finished since Bioshock, so now I'm trying to decide on my next game. Main criteria is single player, with a good story, something I can get immersed in, and I'd prefer something under $30 (on Steam would be nice as well). I have 3 on the short list so far, but feel free to add your own recommendation.

Thanks!

f03 gets my vote
nv is sooooo much better but if u aint played f03 its a good starting point
ME ..meh
bioshlock=cock
go w f03

Tough choice between ME and FO3, but since you wanted immersion and a good story then definately ME, FO3 is amazing but the story isnt as good as ME's, you should buy both tbh, FO3 will last you longer.

Fallout New Vegas.

In US equivilent prices I can pick it up for under $25 and it uses Steam anyway. Might be just a lovely UK deal though.

Mass Effect. Can't go wrong. Immersive story and decent length (anywhere from 20-30 hours for your first playthrough depending how you play).

I LOVED FO3, but I didn't finish it. The only negative I can give it is that it got a bit too easy once I got near level 20. I chose not to indulge in the fast travel, even after I'd been to the same place many times. I believe fast travel kills the immersion to some extent. The exploration/discovery part of the game was truly awesome. Was totally engrossed in the game for a while. I should probably pick up where I left off soon. I haven't even touched any of the DLC yet.

I will add that I haven't played ME or Bioshock 2 (working on the first one now, actually), so I can't comment on those.

The story for Fallout 3 sucks. It's voice acting is also terrible as are it's graphics but the "open-ness" of the game is what made it good. Free-roam and doing what you want is very fun and can definitely last you a long while. You get to max level very early though which can take a lot of the fun out of the game.

Mass Effect's story and voice acting is infinitely better than Fallout 3 but it's a tons more linear but that's not necessarily a bad thing as they focused on a better story and better production quality of the actors in the game. It's not as long as Fallout 3 but then you'll buy Mass Effect 2.

I wasn't blown away by Bioshock 1 so I haven't played part 2 yet and don't think I will for a while.

come play eve

Lol, nah. I can't do MMOs. I've tried multiple times, but I always get bored.

Hmm, interesting. Sounds like ME could be the better choice for my gaming style; in SP games I kind of like it to be pretty linear if the story and characters are good. :hmm:

Even though the main story in FO3 is much weaker than Mass Effect, I voted for it. Why? Because you're making the story yourself. You CHOOSE which places to go to, which areas to complete, what people to help or hurt, etc. If you don't like the looks of the building you just entered and think an ambush is around every corner, then turn around and go back outside - there's nothing saying you absolutely have to complete it.

I found it much more immersive myself than pretending I'm some character that the story dictates. It's probably just me, though.

ME like a click thru movie
pretty game
+production values
feel like itd make a better film
no falcon punching slavers heads off
f03 is where its @

FO3 = Blown up landscape, bombed-out buildings, and dark tunnels. Pretty bleak and not a ton of variety.

ME = Beautiful worlds, bright colors, and creative cities. Much more fun to explore (Even if it is fairly linear).

ME>>>FO3, even if they BOTH are really good.

Ok, from everything here it sounds like I should get ME, but I think I'll wait a week or two just to see if it pops up in a Christmas sale. Fallout 3 fans seem to be pretty rabid, so I'll have to try that one afterwards. 😀 Thanks guys.

Unless you absolutely loved Bioshock Mass Effect has the best story. Fallout is good but I find the story not as compelling as Mass Effect. Bioshock 2 is simply more Bioshock.

Well I kind of did LOVE Bioshock; played it through at least twice IIRC. Thought they did a great job of atmosphere in that one and while the gameplay was nothing amazing and the characters were not even anything to write home about, I was really engrossed in it for some reason.

Just a word of caution, the beginning is a little bit boring, but picks up about 2 hours in when you can control your own ship.

Just stick with it. A lot of people get stuck up in the beginning and never progress after that. I know because I was the same at one point.

Ahh good, thanks for the heads up. That happened to me with a couple of games where they started out boring and I just never bothered going back to them. The Witcher is the first one that comes to mind; it's still sitting in my Steam folder, but I just have no desire to try it again. :\

Fallout 3 is by no means a bad game so yea definitely play it at some time.

I think I would try Fallout Vegas over Fallout 3, more story, from what I have heard. Though Fallout 3 in GotY form might be a good bet. I certainly liked ME as well. Haven't played Bioshock 2 so no opinion there.

I voted for FO from your choices.

But if you like the good ol days, I suggest Mafia2. Although its quite short , I just really like the environment and great voice acting.

But its reaaaly short and also quite easy 😀
