Not necessarily. 97 4runners were available w/ optional factory rear electonic lockers and have pt time 4wd (actual low range X-case). A stock 4wd 4runner w/ some decent 31's w/ or w/o the rear locker is very offroad worthy and should "kill" a wrangler on pavement when it comes to noise/comfort.
BTW, I have nothing against CJ's TJ's, YJ's etc...I'll go wheeling with anyone.

Guapo- Go with the 4-Runner, If possible get the 3.4 L V6 although there is nothing wrong with the 2.7 4cyl, especially when mated with the 5spd manual tranny- You're just not gonna seem much better gas mileage with the 4cyl compare to the 6cyl, but you will notice the power difference. Toyotas have outstanding resale value and very good reliability overall. Take a look in the classifieds at older Toyota 4wd 4-runners & Trucks - they hold their value very well.

The 4Runner and Pathfinder are both different style vehicles than the Escape/CR-V. For the mid-size, the 4Runner hands down. The small - Escape. Out of both - kind of a tie b/t the 4 and the Escape.

Actually SR5 is not a "stripped down" model, the limited may include sunroof, leather, better seats different wheels. I believe around 2000-2001, 4-runners were only available with the SR5 or Limited (maybe sport /highlander pkg). SR5 at one time was the highest available option pkg, but was replaced by the limited (not really limited because I see more of them than any other 4runner). I think the main difference was if you wanted leather or not.
SR5 should be available with most common options - AC, Power doors/window,basic CD, alloy wheels etc...

Reason for my choice: Toyota's are great, reliable cars unlike the Fords listed (Nissan is owned by Ford FYI). Honda is also a great company but I don't like the CR-V.

Yep... 4runners are awesome... but i think you have nissan confused with Mazda... Renault owns part of Nissan..
