Hi all,

I got my two low-voltage (1.3v), 1.6GHz Xeons toda. (from the Hot Deals thread!!!)

$120 for the pair, FYI. They are well known to get to 2.6GHz with no probs at all, and in many cases, stock voltage.

I'm not sure about the markings. It's the "400" that confuses me.

Pic 1

The markings say 1600DP/512/400/1.30v

I know:

1600DP = 1600MHz, designed for dual-processor operation
512 = 512KB L2 cache
400 = ????????????????????
1.30v = default voltage

WTH is the 400?

BTW, here's a pic of the other Xeon...notice how close the Serial#'s are!! :D

Mike those are 400fsb chips!!!

I am hearing of quite few doing 160fsb and 2.6ghz like you were saying....Good luck...

I can't believe I couldn't figure that out!!! I am SUCH A dumbass sometimes. :eek:

Thanks, Duvie!!!

Don't know if you've been keeping up on these babies, but over at 2CPU.COM, most folks are getting b/t 2.6 & 3.0 GHz out of them w/good cooling @ 1.600v. I have a pair of Intel Wind Tunnels (IWT's) from a set of 2.4GHz Xeons that I'll be using AS5 with, so I should be good to go AFA cooling is concerned.

I plan on putting these in an Asus NCCH-DL, as soon as I can get my hands on one!!!

Thanks again.

Hi Acanthus,

I will most definitely be posting everything about this build. :) I don't believe in "secrets" when it comes to computers or overclocking. I learned b/c others shared. Heck, the only reason I bought these things is b/c others shared w/me.

You can purchased the Asus PC-DL for about $190 right now. It is by far the most popular Xeon mobo that has Overclocking features; this is mainly due to it's price vs. performance ratio.

The Asus NCCH-DL adds PCI-X slots (finally, a home for my SCSI raid card!) as well as much better voltage regulation; this board has been out in Europe/Asia for about a month now and is trickling into the USA now...that's what I'm waiting on. The NCCH is one MUTHA of an overclocker.

I mean, who would've thought about it? A XEON board that supports OCing? :Q The time has come. :D

Plus, think about this; it's a cheap way to get into SMP!

$120 for the Xeons
$120 for the PS (EPS ps)
$190 for the PC-DL

I already have PC3200 memory/HD/video card etc. $430. Can't beat that for what is going to wind up being at LEAST a DUAL 2.6GHz rig. Bring on the benchies. :cool:

Yikes, we use those on server builds at work, and they are not quiet at all. Be prepared for a fairly noisy surprise when you first switch on ;)

You've got my curiousity piqued. I have a 12v bench PS...I will hook the fans up. I have a feeling I'll be purchasing some quieter 60mm fans!!

*EDIT*

HO-LEE-CRAP!!!! :shocked: These little buggers are the Delta Blacklabel Screamers of Ye Olden Days! :( They are Sanyo/Denki labeled though.

They WHINE like my ex. :roll: The wind noise doesn't bother me, but that WHINE...man...gotta at least get some 60mm fan grills; they've got to be turning close to 5K rpm. I'd lose a finger.

I may see how bad they are once they are buried inside the case; I haven't decided on which case I'm going to use yet.

They may be going into an Antec 1040-variant, OR I have a full size eATX-capable server case...but it's fans are loud too. Shoot. We'll see.

Lmfao, I thought you'd say that. Now imagine two of those (one on each CPU), plus four 60mm 5000rpm monsters, and four 40mm 5000rpm monsters, all in one case, and you have the server I've been working on ;)

But yeah, they're damned noisy. However, they're designed to keep the components cool no matter what, with no consideration for eardrums! :D

You might be able to drown out the noise if you put a 6" thick layer of foam on the side panel and enclose the entire thing in a 3' x 3' x 3' cement cube with 2" thick walls :D

Good luck on your build! Personally, Ive never heard of OCing a Dual Xeon setup before. Nice find!

Yeah, OCing Xeons is relatively new; most are based on the Intel 875 chipset. AKA everyone's favorite P4 Ocing chipset. :)

There are a few motherboards out there that offer FSB and memory/chipset voltage adjustments in the BIOS. Newer boards like the Asus PC-DL and NCCH-DL even have good old fashioned jumpers on the motherboard that permit "FSB Range Selection." I.E. "this" jumper position nets you 100-133 range in the bios, "this one" nets you 134-166, and so on. :) It's pretty cool indeed.

The only thing missing is the all-important CPU vCore adjustment in the bios. You have to do "the wire trick" and join specific pin holes in the CPU socket to get it to run at whatever voltage you select. There's lots of resources out there for this. The 2CPU.com forums are the best I've found for Xeon OCing info.

Dude, I can't FATHOM the racket that thing makes!!! That must be one helluva server! This ONE IWT fan makes more noise than my entire gaming rig! :( Granted, it's got all Panaflo L1As inside, but still, it's got SIX fans in there...and it's quieter than this one dinky ass fan.

I would imagine Intel specified such a noisy, high speed fan to ensure that HS gets cooled. HMMMM, possibly the HS part of it doesn't shed heat all that easily? The "center" fins of it are copper, but the base and outer fins are aluminum.

Heh, you want noisy, I'll try and get a sound sample with my iPaq when I next see it. However, I think it was completed late Friday night and might therefore be on its way to somewhere else :(

However, PM me if you want a sound file of an LGA-775 fan going absolutely crazy @ 4800rpm- it's pretty bad :)

I would love to get m hands on a ncch-dl but they will be pretty spendy and for the most part I am staying cheap on my hopeful dual xeon build as well....I like the pc-dl but it is not an official 800fsb board so that will only be an option if I try to use 533fsb 2.4's....The Iwill dh800 also hard to find could work as well but Iwill is expensive as well.....

Let me know when you see a price on one....

I am looking at (2) 2.4 533fsb chips that I am going to have tested to run 3.6ghz (by aa guy I know) at defualt or 1.6v vcore actual max....

or

(2) 2.8ghz 800fsb noconas and oc them to 3.2-3.3ghz....

Duvie,

Not cheap, but it CAN be found here in the states.

The NCCH IS an Official 800FSB board and has VRMs that are twice as good as the PC-DL.

FWIW, I've read some bad things about the Iwill DH800...specifically, things like caps and ICs failing when overclocking. Yes, I realize that when you start OCing/modding stuff, you're asking for it. But boards of this caliber (i.e. $300 boards!!!) should be built like a tank.

So far, the NCCH seems to be holding up to the abuse being heaped upon it by our buddies across the pond that've had the board a month already. Very encouraging!!!

FWIW, I can't afford the $328 to buy one right now either. :eek: I have EVERYTHING else, except the board. :disgust:

Wow...I thought it would be like 400...I will be ready soon so hopefully it will be sub 300...Any idea on an of the features for ocing?? Ie ram dividers etc???

I am thinking of adding 1 more gb of pc3500 ultra ram.....

So will the board run 533fsb chips as well??? I mean there may be a chance the 2.4's I get wont run 3.6ghz and 200fsb....If it need 800fsb chips I can get the 2.8s noconas and see what I can get out of them before heat becomes an issue...

My 1.6Ghz are running at 165x15=2.5GHz wth the IWT and default voltage. I also tested them at 13x200 however my ram will not run over 166Mhz so I went for the 1:1 timings.

:light: Cha-ching!!!! :thumbsup:

Oh, how I wish I had the money for a NCCH-DL right now. :(

Default voltage, no less? :Q That is so awesome...I'm amazed and very happy. :):beer:

It stands to reason then that they would hit 3.0GHz w/a nice voltage boost....the stock IWTs can handle the heat.
