pic of PhysX PPU

Well, it will be available around the holiday season, and here is the first pic 😀

PhysX PPU

Really anxious to see the forst benches with a PPU. Supposedly HL2 will have some performance increase with the Novodex-API HL2 utilises.

I figured these are coming out to provide additional and advanced physics and that without a ppu you simply wouldn't see said physics, just the regular stuff we have today. Surely they aren't making these just to give better scores in benchmarks...

I keep looking at the picture and noticing that something is not right... I keep thinking it should have a VGA or DVI connector on the back of it! 😀 It looks quite odd to see a card like a huge fan on it and have no connectors on the back... Just different is all 😀.

Actually, from what I understand HL2 uses Havoc for physics. So, unless valve changes the physics engine, a physx card won't help in that game.

Of course you are right but I guess it would be possible for the code to call certain functions from the PPU's driver instead when such card is present so it could add to the performance one would think.

If these are priced to what current graphics cards are... I am just going to give up..

PKing

And two days after you have bought it you see an article about a dual card version... 🙂

how do you know it's coming in the holiday season?

It's a dutch site

De Asus PhysX zou met kerst in de winkel moeten liggen. Hoeveel deze echter moet gaan kosten is niet bekend.

which translates to: The card should be available around Christmas. The exact price of the card has yet to be determined.

linky is messed up 🙂

Its an awesome thing .Old though for me Cuase I saw the difference in performance in QUAKECON 05 in dallas 😉 The guy said could be from 150-300 bucks and it will be coming out around christmas

can anybody point me in the direction of this thing actually doing anything? if you are able to buy this you are probably running a 2x7800gtx in sli with a x2 4800 & 2GB ram. i doubt this would help. somebody prove me wrong....

god it's so original looking. im more interested in sapphire's liquid metal cooling, but the company that supplies them are working on something else atm.

[i doubt this would help. somebody prove me wrong....]

I don't think there's much they can do with dedicated hardware that the game engine couldn't do on a second core, if it was written to take advantage of it.

The PPU concept is good but as a standalone card I doubt it will ever take off. In order for it to become widespread it needs to be integrated with video cards.

I will try my best bob.

First of all, it's not necessary that you need all that stuff... i mean this card will be $150 starting.... and granted at the beginning it probably won't do much at all (because most software won't utilize it) but that's not THAT much money... you gotta admit.

Second of all... and most important.... the physics in games will greatly increase because of this specific reason:

CPU can do everything but is not REALLY good at anything
GPU can only handle graphics but it does so very well

Therefore, the cpu is left handling certain physics calculations (for example if a box breaks it can just fall apart the same exact way each time and you don't have to really calculate anything. However, if it breaks in relation to where you shot it .... where it breaks and how it falls apart will have to be calculated every single time.) A PPU would be able to handle these calculations especially well because it would be optimized in doing so. Therefore, if before it wasn't worthit for software developers to make your surroundings very interactive or impressive because it would require only the most expensive (very small portion of the market) computers, there will be a much greater reason to do so with these PPUs

Everything I just said may be wrong 🙂 ... but i hope that helps you think about it in a different way.

edit: I highly recommend giving This a read to help you understand what i mean

Let me just say I seen it. Brief summary
6800gt(i think it was gt or ultra)
without it with it
cpu level 45-60% 5-10%
fps 5-8fps 35fps

need i say more . The only thing doing is takeing all the process of calculating all the physics in the game the card does that. Thats why the cpu level and fps improve
