...Ahem. Sorry about the misleading title. Now that I have your attention, I would like to ask a favor of you math whizzes here. If you can help me I will be so grateful...The word grateful would have new meaning!

You see, I have this horrible math teacher and all but a handful are failing the class. Really. So we ask him if he would give us extra credit so we can raise our grades up a bit. This is where he gets messed up: He saiid he would give us each an extra credit problem for homework, without telling us how it is done, and expects us to do it up on the board tomorrow to get credit. If we don't know how to do it by tomorrow, we lose credit. We are able to ask anyone we like for help, but it can't be a teacher from my school.

Ok, I have my problem and i have no clue what to do with it. It's a word problem that has to do with logarithims, which is probably cake for some of you guys. He said that we have to show all the steps on how we got the answer to the problem. Can you guys help me? This could really save me from failing the class. Here goes:

The logarithim of a rational number exceeds the logarithim of it's reciprocal by two, and it's numerator is 90 more than the denominator. Find the rational number.

Remember, the teacher did not teach us what the heck this is about, so I am clueless as to where to start. If any of you can help me, or lead me down the right path, I will be really, really in your debt.

ok here's what i came up with:

10 = 100/10 (numerator is 90 more than 10)
log 10 = 1
reciprocal of 10 is 1/10 = .1
log .1 = -1
1 exceeds -1 by 2

therefore, i think the rational number in question is 10. i would be willing to bet there are other numbers that would satisfy the equation (especially if you used a different base for the log's)....i dunno, i gave it a shot at least....

He's horrible because you're failing? If you didn't know, Iraq's (and most other countries') education system is better than that of the US.
The teacher is giving you extra credit because he feels sorry for you, so take advantage of that. There is nothing mysterious and uncomprehendable about that EC problem.

("You" being not you specifically, but your class.)

2. What does him being from Iraq have to do with anything? At least he's trying to help you.
 
make sure you know what tokamak wrote 🙂 and give that teacher a ass whipping lesson when it comes to math problems on ATOT. If you're failing a class there isnt much to talk about other than you're not studying at all.

log (x+90) - log x - 2 = log x - log (x+90)
2 log (x+90) - 2 log x = 2
log (x+90) - log x = 1
log ((x+90)/x) = 1
(x+90)/x = 10
x + 90 = 10 x
9 x = 90
x = 10
(x+90)/x = 100/10
 
Sorry if I sounded like a racist when I said he was from Iraq. I was trying to hint at the way he teaches vs. the way most american teachers teach. He teaches different, and their is something wrong when everybody else in the other Algebra 2 class is passing with a B or better and the highest grade in our class is a C(1 person).

Where did you pull that from? Iraq's literacy rate is only 60%...

The teacher in the other class probably just grades easier, which is why they have a higher average. Yes, teachers from Iraq do teach differently, I have one right now teaching a mechanical engineering class to a bunch of us seniors at UW (University of Washington) the class is kicking our butts.

As for the previous statement from GigaCluster about iraq having a better educational system... I am gonna try and stop laughing enough to respond to that. Sure, the students over there that actually go to school get better standardize testing grades (IMO, standardize tests are a bunch of BS) than kids from the US, but have you cared to check how much of the actual population over there goes to school? And of those that do, what demograph are they in? (i.e., are the kids that go to school from the richest families) look those things up and post the results.

Anyway, back to the point... Take it as a blessing that this teacher is pushing you hard, it is the best way to walk away from a class having really learned something. If you get a bad grade but have a bunch of new knowledge, then the class was good for you. The only problem comes from the fact that you have to convince your parents that the grade is not really what is important... 🙂

If by chance this is a college course (which I doubt) go bitch at the dean about how lousy of a teacher he is. Get everyone in your class to do the same thing. You will probably still fail but at least the dean will be aware he's an idiot.
 
If you know what is a logarithm and operations with logarithms, this should be fairly easy.

If the logarithms differ by two, that means the number is 100 times bigger than its reciprocal (assuming base 10 logs, of course). In other words, x/(1/x) = 100, or x^2 = 100, so x = +/-10. You can't take a log from a negative number, so x = 10. Now 10 can be written as 100/10 to satisfy the second condition (numerator is bigger than denominator by 90), so your rational number is 100/10 🙂

When you say you don't know what this is about, do you mean you haven't studied logarithms in your Algebra 2 class? If so, your teacher should be ashamed of herself 🙁
 
It's not a college class, thank god. And I'm lucky enough to be one of the few that are not failing. I'm getting a D as of today. I had a C as of last friday :-\
