A high school student Tuesday recited 8,784 digits of Pi ? the non-repeating and non-terminating decimal ? likely placing him among the top Pi-reciters in the world.

Gaurav Rajav, 15, had hoped to recite 10,790 digits and set a new record in the United States and North America. But he remembered enough to potentially place third in national and North American Pi recitation and 12th in the world.

His ranking should be verified by the Pi World Ranking List within two months.

"I'm kind of disappointed, but I guess I did OK," said Gaurav, a junior at Salem High School.

But his mathematical feat won the praise of others, including the math and computer science teacher who got Gaurav interested in it.

"I'm still stunned," said Linda Gooding, one of three contest judges. She then joked, "That's a couple more than I can do."

Gaurav began memorizing Pi while a student in Gooding's class. Gooding holds the competition every year, and said she expected students to learn about 40 digits. Gaurav recited nearly 2,990 the first time.

Gaurav's parents promised him an
Xbox 360 video game console if he had reached his goal. His father, Jogesh Rajav, jokingly offered to get him "an Xbox, but no game."

But Gaurav ultimately turned town his mother Seema's offer to buy him the game system anyway because of their deal.

He will try for the record again in May.

What's the point of requiring kids to remembering that? That serves no useful purpose. How about teaching them something more useful and practical. No wonder reports show American kids are falling behind the world. The teachers are wasting precious time and brain power "expecting" them to recite 40 digits of PI. :roll:

I watched a documentary on a person who saw numbers as particular shapes and colors. So when he thought of numbers he would process the shapes and colors, allowing him to work through the numbers very easily. From what I've been able to search on it, a some of the more prominant PI reciters use this same technique.

I know 25 digits. I'm pretty good at memorizing numbers, though. I remember h (Planck's constant, 4 digits), me (mass of electron, 3 digits), e0 (permittivity of free space, 3 digits), e (as in natural log to 9 digits), etc. I even recall the k' value for the NMOS transistors in my latest design project: 1.259355e-4.

For no reason, a friend of mine and I memorized it to like 30 digits in 7th grade. Yeah, we were geeks.

wtf how does memerizing pi to greater than 2 decimal places help in anything. Accuracy my ass, .001 is hardnly enough to change calculation unless in exponential form and only slightly. This is why our school system is considered a joke to the rest of the world, we spend all our time memorizing pi and not actual math.

3.142 is more than accurate enough in the real world.

That's both impressive and insignificant at the same time. But for all practical purposes, I find 355/113 to be accurate enough. Using this instead of pi to calculate the circumference of the Earth, for example, results an an answer that's off only by 11 feet. Not a bad error across 25,000 miles.

my CS dept at school at an event called Pi Day that was put on by SWIC ( Society of Women in Computing). there was a bake off, pi reciting contest ( only 98 digits tho) and a pie eating contest. It was a good way to spend an afternoon. plus i got free pizza and a pie out of it.

There is no last digit to pi. It goes on forever.

I know it out to 3.14159265 and that's it. So 9 digits. I don't see the point it memorizing it though. I only memorized it because when I was little I got into BASIC programming and used to enter it as it was in the book for every program that used it.
