a satellite is place in an orbit with a radius that is half the radius of the moon's orbit. find its period in units of the period of the moon?


please advise, thanks.

1. two simultaneous equations, substitute the 2nd into the first.

2. Force balance to get your equations...

Fnet = Fgrav, Keplar's 3rd law...

After deriving, you will get something like:

T²/R³ = (4 * pi²)/(G * Mearth) Assuming circular orbit.

R = Rmoon, Rsat = X * Rmoon where X = some fraction of the radius of Rmoon which is given in your problem statement.

still having problems? its pretty much solved now... Just work out the derivation - very easy, get the formula i posted, then substitute.
