there's this tombstone on a small island in the fjord where my parents live, it belongs to a tax collector from the 18th century or something, it says:

"we must not in the sorrow from his passing forget the joy of his dissappearance", I literally fell over laughing when i read it. It loses a little in translation but you get the gist of it.

edit: I had to look up the text to see if I got right, I did, but I also found this little treasure:

"here lies Maren Larsdatter, she died at a very inconvenient time in the middle of harvest"

I lol at this

Protected minorities against mobs with a fucking sword.

Decreed the construction of the golden gate bridge. (and so it was built)

Called for the disbanding of Congress (In a testament to it's corruption, persists)

Became the first Emperor of the United States. (Obama to become the second with the squashing of democracy, executive orders and drone strikes on your house)

What the hell have YOU done with your life?

Ever walk through a cemetery and see "gone but not forgotten" on a tombstone? The person died something like 100 years ago, never did anything to leave a mark in the history books. So yea, that person is gone and forgotten.

Or have something like "beloved husband" on the tombstone, and the guy was a wife beating drunk.

Or something like "beloved mother", and she had a bunch of abortions.

I know a few people that after they died the world is a much better place, but the family had some kind of nice saying put on the tombstone.

Aw man! I thought you had been rehabilitated and had stopped with the craziness. What happened?!?!

For those of you who don't know this story it's fucking fascinating. This is some great Bay Area folklore right here.

Maybe he wasn't that crazy after all.

Being desirous of allaying the dissensions of party strife now existing within our realm, I do hereby dissolve and abolish the Democratic and Republican parties, and also do hereby decree the disfranchisement and imprisonment, for not more than 10, nor less than five, years, to all persons leading to any violation of this our imperial decree.
"Imperial Decree" dated 12th Day of August 1869, published in The San Francisco Herald (13 August 1869)
