I have never used photoshop before and have been wanting to try my hand at photo editing.

I just wanted to improve the look of the photos i take.

What extras do you recommend?

If you shoot in RAW, I would suggest the demo of Photoshop Lightroom... very simple yet powerful.

I always use just PS, so I don't know what extra you use. My favorite tool in PS, though, is the Levels adjustment. Just by drawing in the slidebars in each channel (R/G/B) to the edge of the histogram data, the colors come out crisper and the lighting looks a lot better. By far it's the most valuable tool I've used...

I've read about an unofficial firmware extension that lets you shoot raw on the s2.

I saw it in the canon forums at dpreview - a long thread about it.

Might wanna check it out - I know nothing about it though.

unless you have a really new comp, built in the last 6 months id stay away from lightroom, it runs like crap on older comps

That's true... Core 2 Duo and 2GB is what I use it on...

Photoshop Element is for starter and if you only do touch up or any simple basic task then this is the program for you.
Photoshop requires a lot of knowledges and if you already have mastered all of advanced tasks like layers, mask, and many others then you are going to be a real PRO.

i recommend you use gimp instead on photoshop. since you've never used photochop before you'll find it easier to use gimp and its free and open source.

http://www.gimp.org/

save the money you'll spend on photoshop and get a better camera.

edit
i see your cam is already good. in that case just pocket the extra cash.

Learn how to dodge and burn, play with curves and levels. Of course IMO the biggest difference you can make with a photo is knowing how to crop it.
Photoshop is like half my life. 🙂
