Photoshop vector help

I have a gif file that has a t-shirt design on it. So I take it to the T-shirt place and the guy says, it's not gonna work b/c it's a crappy lo-res gif file. Needs to have more pixels, higher resolution, etc. Then goes on to say that if it were in vector form then it would be fine. Then tells me to do it in photoshop and convert to vector form.

I'm not an expert in photoshop so I have no idea what to do here. How do you take a gif and change it to vector form? I think I get the general idea of what vector form is and why it's useful to make t-shirts. But how do I convert it?

I would think that just saving it in a format that uses vectors would do it... .ps .pdf .ai

Although I don't know anything about this stuff, so don't take my word for it

no, it won't. The only way to do this and have it look good is to trace over your gif file in a vector art program (typically illustrator), essentially redrawing the image. I used to do this for a living, people would bring in an old logo they had on a letterhead or somewhere, but not in electronic form. I'd scan the old logo, and convert it to vector art. Depending on the complexity of the logo, it can take a while, but most logos didn't take me more than an hour....

Anyway, you have to recreate the artwork in illustrator.
