I'm using PhotoShop 5.0...

How does one go about creating those thin horizontal scan lines that can then be placed over (or through) another image? Is that a filter or what?

i use 6, but under filters - other, there's one called ditherbox. i use that.. forgot how but i made the white a transparent color, saved it as a pattern, and the rest is history.

no you make a very small image of a few lines, save it, then use "fill" to fill it over your current picture. it repeats the small image as much as needed, then you adjust the transparency as needed.

-make a new layer.
-zoom in and create a selection 2 px high, and 1 px wide.
-color the top 1/2 of the selection white, and the bottom 1/2 black.
-edit->define patternpattern
-delete selection and then ctrl-d
- choose the fill tool.
- up on the top bar there, choose fill with pattern, selecting the pattern you just defined.
- fill the empty layer with that pattern.
- select -> color range
- choose the black lines (hit ok)
- delete then ctrl-d again.
- then use your transpency to achieve the desired effect.

oh crape, your using 5.0... doh... you wont have the top bar, so you'll have to find out where to use patterns w/the fill tool. sorry.

I'm afraid I lost you at "choose the black lines." Where is the transperency tool/option?

Thanks. While I don't understand the purpose of this step, I think I figured it all out.

welp, that would be for allowing the image behind the 'scan lines' to be more vibrant. but you could do it leaving the black in there.
[edit] and it seems you have already determined this, but in case you didnt, the transparency slider for the layer... its on top of the layer box.

or if you are lazy, you could do the following using Eye Candy 4000 (plugin)

bottom layer: Create black background
middle layer: import image you want the scan lines on
top layer: use the eye candy 'wood' filter to make horizontal black lines, take all the knots, etc, settings down to minimum so they are parallel straight lines. do this larger than the target so you can shrink it down to whatever size you like best

youre done.

I remember when that whole scanline thing was the web design fad about 2 years ago. Is it making a comeback? :)
