Photoshop question?

Huh? So you want invisible text? What's the point? I'm not clear on what you're asking, but have you tried the Text Mask Tool (Alt + click on Text tool icon). Using it for text gives you a selection in the shapes of what you typed. If you use the Text Mask on a new, transparent layer, you can use layer options, etc, to make it more or less transparent over the underlying layer. I don't know if this answers anything, because I'm not sure I understand the question. 🙂

How about this? Is this what you want to do, but with a complicated background?
 
its called shadow... go to Layer>Effects>Inner Shadow....

also make sure you have the layer selected that contains your text
