Well I did it, went through the intermediate course. It was awesome, I had no idea photoshop could do so much (well I had no idea it could do anything since I'd never touched it before). Thanks again LordMaul.

Now I need more info! Must have more lessons on photoshop! Well I guess I can wait a bit, but I'll be looking for them.

Oh, and BTW here were my results

Nice. You got the half moon thing pretty well. It's kind of cool to see that the position of the * when you change the distortion to polar affects the final picture a lot

i think that's the trouble i'm running into. i have PS 5.0 and i would seem that i can't use a filter on text, in this case the "*" without flattening the entire image.
