Photoshop help needed

I need to fix this photo tonight to turn in for a program tomorrow and I've tried everything I know with my limited skills in Photoshop 5.0.

When you view the photo you'll see that around the faces of the boys in the back row where there should be shadows, instead there is red and I can't get rid of it or even lighten it any way that I've tried.

Does anyone know how to fix this? I'd really appreciate any help with this.

That red is a shadow. It's the contrast between the light from the flash and the natural gymnasium lighting.

Although it does make them look like they have gills.

I just did around the heads, not the bodies or hoop or anything. Is that good enough?

EDIT: hmmm, I missed that dude in the second row that still has a shadow behind his head
