What im trying to do is fade an image from its center to its far left corner. So it edges become invisible and it gradually becomes more opec when it reaches the center.

Is there an easy way of doing this rather than using the eraser tool? There has to be, im just over looking it.

well if you had photoshop you could just use the gradient tool(located under the painbucket if you do) and I'm sure most programs have some kind of feature like that now a days.

Select the center part of your image, click on Select->Feather, enter a value (this is the amount of fading you want), then click Select->Inverse, and hit Delete (make sure you've got the color you want as a background first).

For different amounts of fading, vary your initial selection and the feather size.
