Photoshop CUT & PASTE Question

How do I cut and paste a clip onto a larger pic, but not have the background of the pic-to-be-pasted on the larger pic (just stuff up to the edge of the clip)? Thanks.

Sorry if the initial question was ambiguous but this is what I meant: I have Michael Jackson in the forest and I want to cut and paste him (just him without the forest background) onto another pic, say the desert. The way I'm used to doing it is by painting everything around the edges white and then cut and paste but that is far too tedious. Is there a better way?

i am not understanding. when you say background, do you have different layers or is it all on the same layer? if you want to copy/paste the foreground of one image into another without thte background, you have to first separate it from background. please post more information so we can answer your question.

two ways of doing it. One you have to mask the object you are trying to cut out. Now if you don't know what masking is...there is the easy way.
Right click on the star shaped outlining tool. And there should be an option to click points. This is tedious...but you can zoom in on the picture, and click the points around the objects you want to cut out. Not as accurate as masking the object...same concept though.

If I understand what he wants a, easier way than that would be to just select a block around the object, drag it into the new picture as a layer, and then erase the parts that you didn't need with the eraser tool.

Here's the easiest way.

#1. Open the forest picture
#2. Change to quickmask mode (underneath the two "colours" you have selected - there are two boxes, click the RIGHT-hand one)
#3. Pick a brush - make sure you have black selected as brush colour ("white" = eraser)
#4. Paint all over Michael, just stay within the boundary of his body
#5. When done drawing over him (it paints with a see-through red colour - don't worry) - go OUT of quickmask mode. Go back to those 2 boxes & click the LEFT-hand one.
#6. The area around Michael will become selected - go to "select -> inverse" to select just Michael.
#7. Ctrl-C + Ctrl-V :)

"IMAGE", "EXTRACT".

Can zoom so you get it perfect.

However, the real question remains.... what the heck you want with a picture on Micheal Jackson?

Use the magnetic lasso tool. Run the tool around the outline Of MJ until you have made a complete trace of him and the tools beginning meets the end. When it appears selected ( there will be flashing dotted lines around MJ) go to edit, copy.
Then create a new image, use the size that PS gives you, and go to edit, paste. you will have have your no-fingered-glove wonder with no background.
