At one photography site I visit they had a monthly photography contest where members would be given a theme and then they submitted their best photo relating to the theme.

Since we have so many people here interested in photography I thought maybe we could do something similar, but not as a contest, just for fun to see what sorts of photos people would come up with on the theme for comparison and comments.

I think it would be best to not limit it to one photo, you could just post as many as you wanted and the thread would last as long as people kept submitting photos on the theme.

So who would be interested? Do you have any ideas of how to make it more interesting?

If this thread was titled "post yor pictars of katz on a table!!!" or maybe "picturs of a scary spidar!! post urs!!" it would have 200 responses by now.

Do we take new pics or do we post ones we have in the album? Either way, start your own suggestion. :)

True :), but I enjoy those threads as well.

This would be more of a general theme that people could have a variety of photographic interpretations of. I was thinking that the first one could be something like, "Home Sweet Home". People could post anything from photos of the natural surroundings in their home state to family at the dinner table to the exterior of their home to the family's dog in his doghouse to whatever.

Either way would be interesting. When it was a contest at the photography site people would put a lot of work into making it an artistic interpretation of the theme, but since this isn't a contest it could be anything from artistic to just a photo you already have and like that fits the theme.

That's the thing that would make it a little different from the Post a cat pic threads. There are some fun photos in those, but this would give you more of a heads up of a project if you want to really exercise your creative skills, and then again, if you've already got something good in the album that fits the theme you can post that too.

Darn, that must have been during one of my breaks from the forum! From the replies it looks like it was really popular. I wish the photos were still up. So how did it turn out? There wasn't a post about the winner or anything in the thread.

Maybe Anubis or someone would like to do a contest like that again. I wouldn't be able to give the time to running something like that now that school is starting back.

A contest would be a lot of fun, but I figured it would be pretty simple and interesting to just make it a regular thread that everyone could post their pics in, and those with some real skills would naturally make it a little competitive.

If someone would like to do a contest though, I'd be all for that!

Me too. I'm just saying, if you start a thread, people will likely post in it :)

Here's the voting thread. Text

:D The pics were REALLY well done. There are some talented people here in ATOT. I really only do sports...and didn't want to submit in the people categories. The entries blew anything I've done away.

That was a long time ago though. And we ended up having a giant voting thread in atot. (I won the macro with this pic;))

I thought your idea was totally different, where we post a pic relating to the topic at hand (well, relating in your own way).

I haven't seen Anubis here in a long time. Pitty, cause he is a knowledgeable fella when it comes to photography.

Oh , I see. :)

I was just thinking of getting up before dawn in the morning and trying to get some nice sunrise photos over the tops of the mountains around here, it's one of the best types of photos to show off the natural beauty of this area. That got me to thinking about all the different areas of the country and world that the people here are from and I'd like to see what they would come up with if you asked them to show it off. Not every great photo of an area is a nature landscape though, so that's why I thought it would be interesting to make it a more general theme that could get some variety and creativity going.

pyonir, thanks for the link. I wish the photo gallery was still up, I bet there were a lot of great photos from how close some of the voting was in the different categories.

When you said you didn't want to submit any of your sports photos in the people categories, that's why I didn't really want to make it a contest. That might cause a lot of people here with interesting photos to not post them. And if it's a general sort of theme, lots of different stuff would work.

Edit: What kinds of sports do you shoot? I do a lot of high school sports.

SSP, I really like that macro you linked. How did you keep from getting yourself in the reflection?

Yeah, I'd like it to be different, besides not being a contest per se, in that you'd give people an idea to interpret in their own way. Besides the quality of the photographs, you'd also see peoples' different takes on it, how creative they could get, just more variety and perspectives.

Go for it, I'd be up for it.

Just don't ask for things of natural beauty - there aren't any around here ;)

Hey, beauty is in the eye of the beholder, and all that.

I think I'll give it a try. I'll just throw something up tomorrow to get it started and then try to get something a little more creative later to add if it gets going.

I think I merged 2 different pics together. One was set to high exposure and the camera was almost invisible. I just copied the bright flash like part over and erased the left over camera. It was a while ago so my memory is a bit sketchy.

If you do start another thread on this, link that to this thread please. :)

I'm not very skilled in procesing photos, I'd like to learn though. Before digital, I saw some people do amazing things in darkrooms to bring out the best in their photographs.

I'll put a link to the new thread in this one and a link to this one in the new thread in case I don't explain what we're going for well enough. They should get the idea from reading both.

You name it, i've probably shot it. The only "pro" leagues I've shot is WNBA, LPGA, Arena Football Legue and NHL. I've shot Arena Cross, Monster truck shows, all high school sports, and college level sports of many kinds.

With HS sports starting up here in AZ this week...it's going to get super busy for both of us it looks like. :D

Edit: I'm also just now starting to try and get into portrait model photography. I have absolutely zero studio equipment, so I'm sure you realize it's a little tough to get things started. lol. Slowly but surely.

Ah, now you're talking my language :D

Contest sounds like fun. I'd be up for it.

Excellet lighting, composition and locations (for the ones not in studio)! I'm hoping to get anywhere near that level in the next year or so. I've got a long road ahead of me though. How long did it take you to perfect your "workflow"?

I've been doing model photography for about a year. I shoot almost every weekend.

Sure, the photo threads sound like a good idea, especially without the idea of a contest on people's shoulders. Sounds like a good opportunity for people to learn from others how to take specific kinds of photos. And stuff. Yay!
