I actually later decided to buy the kit lens that everyone seems to hate. That shot was with the kit lens at 18mm.

I actually like the kit lens. It's very versatile, and seems to cover the range that you'll often use in everyday picturetaking.

Maybe if they made a higher-end version with that magnification I'd get that.

Like, the Canon EF-S 17-55mm f/2.8 IS USM?

Of course, that'll cost a grand. The Tamron SP AF17-50mm F/2.8 Di II LD might be fitting alternative with excellent ratings.

Both lenses are as fast as zooms get.
