Photo studio question

ok, up to this point i've been shooting strictly scenery pictures with the occasional people mixed in. i'd like to start doing portraits and full body shots (not necessarily nude) with black/white or other "backdrops".

are there studios with this that you can rent on a project by project basis? is this common? also, if it is available, can you use their lighting equipment?

thanks!

Yes, such places do exist. Typically, at least from what I've read, they are expensive and are available only in big cities. Whether or not you can use their lighting equipment is up to the renter - it's not a guarantee.

It is more common around here for photographers to 'share' studio space and each person has their corner, if you will.

Yeah, it would depend on the location. Here in Silicon Valley you can rent studio space, but my friends who do it supply their own lights. They more often than not just convert their living room to a makeshift studio for the day. As long as you don't accidentally photograph parts of your room that you don't want in the shot you'll be ok. I don't see studio rentals happening in more rural areas.
