Can anyone recommend me some software where you put a bunch of pictures from a digital camera and create a slide show with neat transition effects, text and music in it?
thanks.

For free? Google "Microsoft Photo Story"

For Pay? Google "Photodex Proshow Gold"

Photodex is the best, hands down. It is like 69$ though.

To put the slideshows on dvd with photostory you'll either have to transcode and use DVD Authoring software or buy a plugin they sell at Microsoft's site - I think it was like 20 bucks.

I have Photodex ProShow Gold - also Arcsoft DVD Slide Show, and the new Corel Media 1. For pure and simple DVD slide show with music, menus, transition effects, Ken Burns motion, etc., I prefer Arcsoft for its ease of use. It includes all the required transcoding and authoring.

I didn't like Photoshow, unless the newer versions have improved. The one I used had zero 3d effects and no Kens Burn transitions. It's good in the sense it's simple to use and has tons of really basic transitions like barn doors and wipes. Sony Vegas has a trial version and you can do SO MUCH with it, yeah it's overkill for a slidshow, but you can do some amazing hollywood level stuff with it. If you get it with the VAAST plugin - forget about finding anything as good. The shear amount of professional transitions in Vegas is mind boggling, add in 3d effects and you have perfection. Not worth the price to make a slide show dvd, but the trial should allow you to do what you need. VAAST has a 14 day trial too.

Nero Photoshow is decent, I believe it even has some 3d transitions to boot.

Memories On TV. Easy peasy and very professional output. Just place the images, select the transition/s add the music and the slide show will sync to the length of the audio for you.

Windows Live Photo Gallery in conjunction with Windows DVD Maker is pretty easy and free, if you're on Vista. It may not give you as much freedom as you're looking for though.

tried the Memories On TV trial, looks really outstanding, if I didn't already own Vegas 7 I'd probably jump all over this far better than the others I've tried, and looking for a good solution I've tried a dozen? lol it was a lot, and most sucked hard.
